Re: X-Trail Tail Lights Modification

Hi...Greetings from Malaysia! I need some help in details for modifying the tail lamp. I've gotten spare bulb holders from Ichikoh and was wondering if anyone could share some tech knowhow in adding those bulbs to the top most lamp compartment. The plastics seem brittle and can't imagine how you guys actually bored a hole through it. Would it be a better idea to insert smaller LED bulbs instead of huge std sized ones?

Would appreciate some photos if possible.

I'm 99% sure Jalal has had this modification done, but I think he got an auto electrician to do it for him, though.

Hi Gerald,

Yes, I had this mod done to my exy and it looks great with the xtra 2 barke/tail lights at the top.

You can see the final product in my web site.

Check-out pages 3 in this thread for a bit more details on how my auto electrician has done this mod.

The electrician used some sort of small saw to cut hole in there and then attached the new bulb holders with a screw from the base and covered that with some sort of elastic black tape to stop any water getting into the tail light.

My advice, don't do it yourself, it's not an easy job and you may damage the tail light if anything goes wrong. Take it to an auto electrician instead.

I will try to get some pics organised with the tail light open, so you can see how it's been fitted.

Thanks so Jalalski, we actually can't really depend on electricians here. The only safest option is to do it ourselves if we have the proper tools. Just need to study a few options available before I commence doing it myself. (I'm the DIY type)

HaHaHa, OK then, I think it's much safer to do it yourself.

I will get some pics hopefully this weekend. I actually poped the tail lights out a week ago to tape the new bulb holder with that chrome looking tape to increase the reflection and cover the hole from the outside (I'll take a pic of that too).

Re: X-Trail Tail Lights Modification

A million thanks Jalaski!

Will have to take into consideration the sort of weather we have in Malaysia...it rains most of the time during certain times of the year and water proofing will be a serious issue.

The pics you provided will be of great help. Thanks again.

You're welcome Gerald,

It rains in Sydney a lot too (which is great we need every rain drop) but that black sticky tape is actually waterproof. I haven't had any water leakage problems since it was fitted.

P.S. I have sent you a PM about the xtrail badges, can you pls. help me out with some info. if you can?

Hi Jay,

Yup, same here when I bought my xtrail, I asked the same question and the salesman said it's nothing, just a cover emoticon So the 1st thing I did when I got home was open that cover and saw some wiring...this lead me to the rear fog light.

Not sure what are you referring to? Fog lamps are in the front bumper, yes you can get the aftermarket ones and yes you can hook-up the front fogs to the rear fog light (if you're getting one). You can also get big driving lights for your nudge, but these will be hooked-up separately.
