Re: UHF CB radios
I have some experience with UHF handhelds only and GME is a much better brand that Uniden for the ones I've used.
Sorry can't comment on those particular models that you've quoted.
Although while your at it, you might also want to check out the "icom" range of UHF radios. These would possibly be a cheaper option to GME. They are highly durable.

Re: UHF CB radios
Gordon,
I don't know how accurate our "test" was, but we had two of the GME TX3200 - one in each vehicle, with the same antennas, and I think we managed a range of 4km.
To do the test, I asked the car in front to tell me a landmark as they drove past it, and it was 4km before I got to the same point as we were following behind. We were both doing approximately the same speed. Terrain was twisty sealed roads on hills (we did the test a few times) on the way to Oberon (Cox's River Road - the turn-off at the bottom of the hill after the speed camera on the main highway, heading west (if you know the area)).
I assume you might be able to get more range with a) a longer/bigger antenna and/or b) straight roads (not blocked by hills, trees, etc).

Re: UHF CB radios
Gordon,
I checked the other thread I quoted earlier and it says it's a 6db antenna, 830mm long.
You are thinking of the same road. So there are lots of side-tracks on that road? I thought there were! Clare must've thought I was going crazy as I kept pointing out all these little dirt tracks coming off the main road (but she happened to miss seeing them all). They could just be driveways to properties for all I know, but there is one dirt road that is more noticeable than others - it's not far after the intersection that has the ripple speed bumps (heading back to Sydney from Oberon, but it's got a "Duckmaloi" sign heading towards Oberon). There is a parking area at that intersection, but approx 200m (?) after that intersection, heading back to Sydney, there is a dirt track I keep saying "next time we come past here I'm going to drive along it and see where it comes out" as I'm sure it comes out a little further down the road after a handful of corners...
I'm getting off-topic, but I'd be interested in knowing what tracks are around that area, as I'd like to give them all a try... We're heading up there again this weekend, actually.

Re: UHF CB radios
Lance,
Gordon is no longer an xtrail owner (he upgraded to a Patrol) and I am not sure if he still reads our forum or not, but what I do know for sure is that he had chosen the TX3200, as we both bought the same unit together from Prestige Communications.
It's a pretty simple unit but will do anything you want it to do. The TX4400 is a more advanced unit that has a bit more features than the TX3200 but it is dearer.
You can compare the two models HERE
I have only used my TX3200 once since I bought it and it is now sitting in its box in the garage, as I found that using hand-helds involves less hassles if you don't have a CB radio mounted permanently like my case.
The CB radios are excellent for off-road where you need to keep both hands on the steering wheel, while the hand-held ones are good for long highway runs if you drive in a convoy or with someone you wanna talk to along the way.
