Personality and politics

So to what degree do you think a person's personality traits influence a person's choice in identifying themselves as Conservative or Liberal? Libertarian, Independent, etc.

I've been looking for literature on the subject.....I haven't found exactly what I think is a good study yet. But I do feel there could be a strong correlation.

Careful there Bro...

You start throwing personality traits around, tied to a person's politics, you may end up hurting folks you don't intend to.

Just for example...and don't answer this...but do you think "self-centered" people are of a particular political persuasion? If you do, and you identify it, then you're essentially calling your friends who lean that way politically, self-centered. See what I mean?

Not somewhere I want to go...

Re: Personality and politics

I'm a very self centered person. It's a personality trait I've battled with for a long time. I don't think that "self centered" is what comes to mind when most people think of what it means to be liberal.

I'm curious exactly what types of personality traits that you are intersted in looking at, Cos. I'm not really sure if there will be much to it though. You may find some correlations, but that does not imply a cause and effect in regards to one's political affiliation. For example:

Flash back to intro to statistics class. One of the most commonly used to show thatt correlation does not imply causation is the statistic that shows that neighborhoods with a higher number of churches and other places of worship per square mile have higher crime rates than areas with fewer churches. There is a statistical correlation between the two statistical bits of information but you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would try to say that the higher consentration of churches is responsible for the higher crime rates.

I grew up liberal.. Didn't have much of a choice living in what has lovingly been dubbed "The People's Republic of Cambridge." Until I was about 16, there were several negative personality traits that I associated with conservatives. I first started to become interested in understanding and finding what I agreed with about conservative ideology when I began to see many of the liberals around me exhibiting the same negative traits that many of the liberals in my life had labeled as 'conservative.' Some of these traits were: stubbornness, inability to understand an oppositional viewpoint, even cruelty.

I think personality traits become an easy way to define the members of a political party to which one is opposed; however, I think that such myopic categorization often tends to become pejorative in nature, and as a result creates tension and resentment between people of differing political ideologies as opposed to helping people think about what it means to be liberal or conservative.

That said, I do no think the question itself, separated from political discussion, is a pointless or meaningless one to ask, and I would be curious to see the results of any empirical studies, especially studies of the ways in which people define their own personality traits rather than the traits of those with whom they disagree.

That's a good question, but a tough one to answer.

My guess is that there is not a strong correlation between any set of personality traits and political identification.

I've noticed a lot of those surveys that attempt to place you on some kind of political spectrum often have questions that are really getting at personality types.

Re: Personality and politics

Well done research on the subject would be fun to see. I'm not sure how useful it would really be. It would probably be a lot like the statistics that show that states with a higher number of people with a college degree tend to be blue states and those with fewer are typically red.

The information is good for trading barbs on message boards but doesn't really add up to much.

Personality and politics

I think socio-economic status needs to be added in there as well to make it more accurate....

A few examples:
- Movie Star liberal has more money than he knows what to do with but want the gov't to be benevolent since they are too greedy and lazy to do it them self but wish to appear caring when they are in fact just a false altruist.
- Rich CEO conservative wants the gov't to give tax breaks so he can get richer under the guise of being a gainful employer
- Small business owner conservative wants less gov't and taxes and restrictions so he can keep his business open and competitive
- Unemployed liberal seeks gov't help to stay afloat and get an opportunity to be successful in the future

In my opinion it comes down to 1 main question: do you want the gov't to be responsible for you and yours or do you want personal responsibility and a community to care for itself?

I'm of the opinion we were better of before FDR and the new deal and big gov't. In the days where the community took care of itself and people were accountable for their actions. The gov't "safety net" has lessened out communities and in great numbers eliminated people taking care of one another since most feel, "why should i the gov't will do it?"
