posticon Ringo. the so called "Least talented Beatle"!

I see in todays news that Ringo apparently refused to sign an autograph for an older woman when asked at the Chelsea flower show. The reports also say it made the woman cry. naturally the press is pulling straight from the 'Ringo bashers handbook' and saying the usual "least talented, ugliest Beatle" and such!

So, do people think it is an insult to call Ringo "The Least talented Beatle"? How many musicians would trade their whole career as well as their eye teeth (and their bad teeth) to swap places with Ringo and be called the least talented Beatle? Most all of them I am sure. There is really no less or more talented member of the fab Four to my way of thinking. But just for the sake of this argument let us pretend Ringo did have the least abilities of the four. Being the least talented Beatle is sorta like being the least talented astronaut, rocket scientist, NY Yankee, brain surgeon ect. Being the most lacking of the four would still make him the 4th most talented musician in the World.

Ringo had 7 consecutive top 10 singles as a solo artist, John, Paul nor George did that. And what lead singer of any other major group recorded solo records and still had no hit song of their own come from it? Mick Jagger, Pete Townsend, Robert Plant, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Donald Fagen, just to name a few all tried and had some success, a song or two. But none had the string of hits that the Beatles drummer had as a solo artist. Ringo seems to be an easy target. People (usually non drummers) ridicule his drumming. It is human nature to go after the best and tried to beat them down. Good thing Ringo is a good natured chap and lets it all roll off his drum skins as well as his back.

Most professional drummers credit Ringo's rock steady time keeping and amazing drum fills. He changed the way drummers hold their sticks and made the drummer a star and not just the guy hidden in the back. And no one seems to ever refuse Ringo when he asks them to play on his records or on his tours. He called Tom Petty once and before Ringo could ask him what he wanted to, Tom said "I'll do it, whatever it is"!

When the Beatles started the actual recording of the track 'Hey Jude', Ringo Starr almost missed his drum cue. He left for a toilet break—unnoticed by the other Beatles—and the Beatles started recording. In 1994, McCartney said, "Ringo walked out to go to the toilet and I hadn't noticed. The toilet was only a few yards from his drum booth, but he'd gone past my back and I still thought he was in his drum booth. I started what was the actual take, and 'Hey Jude' goes on for hours before the drums come in and while I was doing it I suddenly felt Ringo tiptoeing past my back rather quickly, trying to get to his drums. And just as he got to his drums, boom boom boom, his timing was absolutely impeccable."
