The Parable of the Boy Who Cried Wolf (UPDATED)

Given all the current events of late, I thought you'd all like to know a little more about me since I've become a frequent poster here. Well, here you go, starting with Chapter One -- from my earliest recollections.

When I was just half my height and quarter of my age, I first heard the parable about "The Boy Who Cried Wolf." We all know that it's a popular story in children's literature and even in our language's idiomatic metaphors. How many times have you heard the expression, "He cried wolf".

When I was that 10 year old boy, I did a lot of crying -- of wolves and other toddler nonsense. I wanted attention; I wanted people to like me and always see that I was right about things. For instance, I remember clamoring for attention about nothing in particular one day -- almost to the point where I consterned and frustrated my late Mother. I was telling a bunch of nonsensical stories to endear attention towards me....but they were all fiction. Untruths. Lies. However one can sugarcoat my behavior as a mere boy.

Indeed, I had acted this way, quite often. I'm not sure if my sisters remember, but I know my younger brother does because he was always on the wrong end of my fable weaving. Except on that one afternoon. That day, I was on the wrong side of crying wolf.

My brother and I were racing our bikes down the neighborhood street hill, when a car came out of nowhere. He spun off into another direction and rode on his merry way. As for me, I lost control of my little two-wheeler and crashed head first into a sewer grate. I was bleeding excessively from a deep gash, just a quarter-of-an-inch above my left temple lobe. I screamed for my brother, but he did not come. And I screamed some more. Now, he didn't see the accident, but heard my screams. He later admitted he didn't return to my side because he thought I was faking and fibbing again, which was that day's pattern for me.

Somehow, I crawled into the safety of my backyard, and then through the backdoor of my Mother's house. I screamed for her. She was elsewhere in the house. Her first reaction was to ignore my repetitive behavior. But I continued, and thankfully in a matter of seconds she saw that I wasn't crying wolf. I had lost a lot of blood and was ashen white.

To the hospital we went, where thankfully my little head with the big gash was repaired.

That night, my Mother told me the bedtime story about "The Boy Who Cried Wolf." I remember saying at the end of the tale: "That's me!"

But I did not want it to be me anymore. So, the 10-year-old in me decided to shun fiction for attention. And to this day, I still shun the wolves and focus on the real around me.

And as I do, I lament, if only all people who need attention as much as me as that little boy could do the same -- and forget the wolves and the fables, and face the realities. Then they will find that people will care; they will love; they will befriend. They will make that boy who cried wolf a more humble and pragmatic human being open to all and received by many.

Such is Chapter One on the Story of a Life of No One in Particular....Me. Since then, over the course of the next 31 years, nothing much of consequence has occurred in my life. That is until today.

That's so true LL....they still bring consequence to my life, through their lyrics and messages -- and on a daily basis.

I guess all "true" Beatle fans could say that. Thanks for pointing that out to me LL...
