Compression Settings Hi Quality DVDs.

I have read all the threads here and Creative Cow plus many many more forums on the net. I am yet to find something that will help me even more...

FACTS-
I create DVDs for work with 16x9 hi-res material. Each piece of material is between 30-60sec long. I go from Compressor 3.0.3 then create the DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4.

With the material calculated in time there is no more than 30min. I am using the 90min hi quality compressor DVD preset.
The material is not coming out great, it is ok but I need to try and make it better. Once I have gone through the process of actually making the DVD in Studio Pro the quality of the vision is standard. I need to try and make HIGH quality material not just standard.

Compressor settings I am using -

Description: SETTINGS FOR DVD (90MIN)
File Extension: m2v
Estimated file size: 3.03 GB/hour of source
Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
Usage:SD DVD
Video Encoder
Format: M2V
Width: 720
Height: 576
Pixel aspect ratio: PAL CCIR 601 (16:9)
Crop: None
Padding: None
Frame rate: 25
Frame Controls: Automatically selected: Off
Start timecode from source
Aspect ratio: 16:9
Field dominance: Automatic
Average data rate: 6.9 (Mbps)
2 Pass VBR enabled
Maximum data rate: 8.3 (Mbps)
Better motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 12, Structure: IBBP
DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled.

What am I doing that can be improved or do I need to give more information?

Hi Caskias
try changing your setting to One Pass CBR in the quality tab
in the encoder section of Compressor. Change the bit rate to 7.8. If you are using dolby encoded sound you could push it to 8.2. Be aware that DVD Studio Pro 4 will encode
all menu elements to the setting specified in the encode section of DVD Studio Pro 4 preferences. The default is quite low quality and this can be bumped up as well.
I suggest keeping this setting at no greater than 7.5.

Hope this helps
Best regards

Also try to actually take control over the field dominance rather than just leave it on automatic.... I see that also on various quicktimes I export, that by doing those settings manually improves the quality even though it's highly compressed.. Never leave it to chanceemoticon

Thanks to you both!
I have tried all and above but it doesn't change that much.
If you think of anything else please don't hesitate on writing it down here. I will eventually get to the bottom on this. Oh I will.
Thank you again for your advice.

Hello there,

I currently have this dilema, where I am trying to determin the best video format/setting for footage that is 1440x1080,25 fps.
Can someone advise which video format(see aattached image) would be best to use in DVD studio pro 4, that way the best quality can be achieved

many thanks

Hi Chameleon198
if you are encoding HDV 1080i50 and want to get a Standard Definition widescreen PAL result (16:9) just use the DVD Best Quality 90 minutes setting from the DVD group. I am using Compressor version 3.05. This gives good results for SD. The video format tab you have screen grabbed is showing you what your footage will encode to.
The setting for SD widescreen is video format PAL, Frame rate 25, Aspect Ratio 16:9 and field dominance Top First.
You could push the settings in the Quality tab if you want better quality. I don't suggest pushing the Maximum Bit Rate setting above 8.2. Dolby encoded audio at the standard setting rather than PCM 48 will allow for more video quality, but remember you only have 9.8 Mbs to play with in standard DVDs. PCM audio takes 1.5 Mbs of this bandwidth.

Hope this helps

Re: Compression Settings Hi Quality DVDs.

Hi Chameleon198
those formats in this tab are for HD type DVDs.
For BluRay and HDDVD format discs.
BluRay looks like the format we will be settling on for high definition DVDs. Most people don't have high definition DVD players yet. This is a very different format to SD for DVD.
There are currently only a few authoring systems supporting the full format for BluRay, the big one being the industry standard for high end DVD production, Sonic Scenarist.
The last public comment from Steve Jobs about this HD situation and Apple DVD authoring included the phrase 'bag of hurt' because of the lack of any current standard for interactive implementation of the features of Blu Ray which include full URL access at any time during program playback, an entire JAVA script implementation for flash style rollovers etc... This means real trouble for a defined feature set for a global rollout of an Apple DVD authoring solution incorporating ALL of the features of BluRay and HDDVD. These settings inside Compressor 3.03 or greater at least allow you to deal with the video content of HD format DVDs. Because of Apples across the boards support of H.264 which is the codec base for all HD authoring of DVDs you can create simple HD DVDs with the appropriate burner from DVD Studio Pro 4. These work really well.
So you can use those settings for better quality IF you are prepared to author an HD format DVD...

Best Regards

Hey Footagehead,

I understand now and it finally makes sense now. Blu Ray is the future in my books, its just of matter of time till people start buying Blu Ray players.
So are you saying that if I encode to 1080 HD video format and burn it at that quality, will the DVD play on a blu ray player??

many thanks, much appreciated

Hi Chameleon198
thats right - it will play on a BluRay player IF you burn
it on a locally attached BluRay burner.
BTW the blank discs cost at least $20.00 AUD...each
