AVI conversion...

Ok, I'm making a doco about this artist and eventually... FINALLY managed to get a copy of this rare Norwegian feature film about his childhood from the Norwegian Film Library...

Only problem is that it's an avi file.... And I think it will go quicker to ask the following question to the good people here at sydney fcp than try to press out a usable copy of the film from these library people.... So here goes.

I need to be able to import it to fcp, apply subtitles, export it, get it approved and then use it for my doco...

Is there anyone out there that knows a clever way to convert an .avi file into a .qt I can work with in FCP? I know FCP applications doesn't support avi (yes it's one of those tricky non qt avi files)

MPEG streamclip doesnt recognize it and since I need the surround audio, I can't just "fake it" badly and use iShowU to record the footage (would most likely look crap anyway.)... But the avi itself is in regular dvd size quality and surround sound.... and hope to maintain that also after the conversion.

Any suggestions? Is there any affordable nifty applications for mac out there?

Basically t

Hey MCR,

Do you know anything about the Codec itself?

If you try to open it in QT does it simply refuse to launch or do you get a blank (black or white) screen?

If you Get a blank screen when you launch it in QT you can hit Apple-I and get check out what codec it is - that would help to find a solution if possible.

Check out the image for details:

Mpeg streamclip doesnt like it and quicktime shows just black, it does have the sound but it's like its looping a bad background noice 9which it usually does on most avi's I've tried.

In fcp you can actually import it and in the viewer you see a white screen (no audio) with black bars. If you drag it onto the timeline the only thing you can see in the canvas window is a red frame with the message " Codec could not be opened" The sound is sort of there but with a jittering noise.

The format is supposedly: DIV3', 720 x 432, Millions
MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 48.000 kHz, 25 fps

Is there a quicktime plugin out there for this?

oh my bad, I ment to say you have audio (but bad audio) in fcp as well, that can be heard both after rendering and in the viewer window...

Cool - the reason you can hear it is because you have the Mpeg layer 3 codec on your system (hence you can play MP3's) but you don't have the DIV3 codec.

I think its a forerunner to DIVX

You can get the free download here but what you really want is a DIVX codec for Quicktime which you can get
here.

Once you've done that you should be able to see it in Quicktime and FCP although you might want to convert it to a more FCP friendly format (DV or ProRes) before working with it

Good luck emoticon Lemme know how you go...

got the visuals up and running now and it looks like it will be easy to export a quicktime from that, so thank youemoticon

The problem still lies with the audio... it's still clunky... Like a frame of sound are missing every second and some of it sounds warped... Anyone know how to record from whatever is playing inside the computer? Cause the audio sounds perfect on vlc... If I could just record that if would be great... God I miss my old mini disc... used to do this job so easily....

Does the audio sound bad in Quicktime or FCP?

The audio is MP3 and so not optimized for FCP - if you can open it in Quicktime try exporting Auio to AIFF.

Otherwise you can use iShowU to capture the Audio - you have iShowU?

Re: AVI conversion...

can I capture to audio via iShowU? I mean just the sound that's going on INSIDE the computer? First time I tried that I couldn't figure it out... Kept on recording my mumbles and swear words. If you know how to record that it would be really REALLY useful

Quicktime and fcp gives the same audio problems. It is just vlc that can pick up the right type of clean sound....

But I'll try to export to aiff and hope for the best

Thanks for great feedback btw!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
