reading AVI files

Ok so this has nothing to do with compressor but anyways

ok so my macbook pro doesnt read avi files. (Quicktime doesn't of course)

Is there any freeware out there that can play (or ultimately convert) avi files/ Perhaps a plugin?? I am open to buying software if that is the only option but if you have any experience with players and can give me a tip on which one to choose that would be great.

Re: reading AVI files

Hi SkiTroll
AVI's can be nasty - the codecs this format uses can be wacky and non-quicktime friendly.
The number one offender is DIVX.
The free VLC media player will work with pretty much any file type on a mac - heres the link:
http://www.videolan.org/
For real surgery I suggest installing the 3ivx codec which will transcode inside the quicktime player for most file types. Heres the link:
http://www.3ivx.com/download/
Now that telestream has released the new episode pro application which will support Flash, Avi, MXF and most HD formats from inside Compressor 3 this issues may have gone away - but this application is not cheap. Heres the link for it:

Best Regards
