Certification Process for Final Cut Studio

Currently studying Final Cut Pro via the self pace books in Melbourne

Now I can take the FCP 100 exam at any prometric testing site, but I've noticed that if I want to take any of the other level one exams for Motion, Color, DVD Studio etc. I have to go through Prometric's "Prime" system.

Does anyone have any experience as a non course based student successfully using this system as the instructions are vague and lacking.

(See http://www.apple.com/au/training/pro/enduser.html which tells you to go to an apple authorised training center - http://training.apple.com/locations - Box Hill Tafe is the closest centre with nothing on their website, the sydney based learning centers have just as little information)

Cheers!

Hi meowmanx
you can currently sit for these exams at AATCs in Sydney.
They are closed book and proctored by Apple Certified Pro trainers. The AATC I work for as an Apple certified trainer will be offering these Prometric exams on a regular basis beginning in January 2009. I know of one other Sydney AATC which is also offering this service.
You will need some online IDs to complete these exams.
An Apple ID and a Prometric ID.
When more AATCs in Australia become available to sit these exams I will post here in this forum and let you know.

Hope this helps
Best Regards

Thanks footagehead!

Once I've started studying up for the next exam I'll get in touch with one of the AATCs in Sydney. There is one facility in Melbourne - Box Hill Tafe - shall contact them via email and see if they have additional information to share.

Oh, and I found some additional information about Apple's use of Prometric Prime system at the end of the Final Cut Pro Practice Exam, though this is for taking the practice exam (at a cost of US$25 a go) but at least it gives a bit more information again.

Cheers

I've booked in for exam FCP100 tomorrow afternoon!

Hi meowmanx
thanks for your kind reply and good luck with your exam.
You will find the practice exam helpful if you have not sat for one of these exams before. My other suggestion is to read the relavent apple certified book - in your case the Apple Pro training series book called Final Cut Pro 6 - Professional Editing in Final Cut Studio 2 as there will material from this book covered in this exam.

Best Regards

Studied the book for about a month. Took the exam today and passed. Only weakness was in multiclip edits. Interface and keyboard shortcuts. Made sure to understand slip slide roll and ripple edits which paid off

If anyone else is studying for the exam this post was rather useful for tips on what to study;

http://dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=152982

I have the books for color and soundtrack, dvd and effects in motion. Considering soundtrack then color to study next

Haven't heard back from box hill tafe yet.

Do you know what the around-about cost to sit an exam at an AATC? Prometric charged 130 for the FCP100 exam

Hi meowmanx
good to hear you passed your exam.
I think the AATC I work for will be charging around $200.00.
This will be for 3 hours if needed - giving you an hour to settle before sitting your exam.
As you have already been through the process and have a tech ID and an Apple ID I may suggest to the AATC I work for that exam students like yourself get a reduced rate.
Less work load for me.
Please use the email link below this post if you want to keep in touch.

Best Regards

Re: Certification Process for Final Cut Studio

Hi Footagehead,

Happy New Years.

After hearing nothing from Box Hill tafe down here in melbourne I gave them a call. The short of it was that they can't help as they do not have a proctor in board, I would assume to sponsor the Prime system Apple uses in Prometric to exam candidates.

So it looks like I'll by flying up to sydney very soon as I've just finished the lessons in Soundtrack Pro 2 and just starting Color.

I also did a bit of investigation with the other centers around asia and found pricing for taking the exam at the centre you work at on par. A place in NZ was charging $NZ250 ($NZ200 if you took a course with them) while a place in Hong Kong is charging HK$1170 (about $AUS210)

Thanks for your help advice thus far!

Re: Certification Process for Final Cut Studio

Its been 4 months since I started this thread.

My conclusion is this;

1. Training books are easy to come by - and the courses are chapter-to-chapter the same as the books.
2. The FCP100 exam can be taken at any prometric center around the world (same places as those Microsoft/Adobe/Cisco exams get done)
3. Apple Australia uses a different training and exam timetable database to the rest of the world - this can be VERY confusing.
4. You'll have better luck organizing to take any of the pro exams with a course than without.
5. The system for anything other than FCP100 examination is Prometric Prime - an exam proctor must purchase vouchers from Apple for you to take the exam.

I'm flying up to asia for a couple of weeks to get my exams done - I emailed a place, they responded within the hour and allow the flexibility of taking the exams outside their set schedule.

Now, lets just hope that Final Cut Studio 3 isn't released in the next few months...
