Re: The first listen...
Softer than Brown
You know, the guitar on this reminds me of the Alan Parson's Project, though I can't put a name to the song I mean. (From I Robot? The Show Must Go On?)
Sorry, I keep trying to say that these songs sound like other things but I'm not meaning that in a bad way, I'm just trying to find ways of describing them (and writing about music when you're not a musician isn't very easy).
Nice soft vocal from Bryan. An unusual (high) range for him but sounds very nice. Works very well with Heather backing it. And then a trademark emotional electric solo.
A beautiful song, really.
Ends with four notes of Evergreen
Yep. The CD finishes on a perfect high point. (Though a low key one. A low-key-high point... or a high-low-key point... or... ok, I'll shut up now and play it again )

Re: The first listen...
Last thoughts...
Well, 20-odd-pounds is a lot of money for even two CDs. Was it worth it?
Yes, absolutely. More than worth it. The album is as good as I could have hoped. Probably better than I expected. Certainly more enjoyable (at first listen) than Storms Over Still Water. The best thing they've ever done? No, I don't think I'll ever be able to think that. But that's ok. By definition, they can't ALL be the best thing they've ever done.
The "packaging" is remarkably ordinary, but to be honest I don't mind. I was expecting more of a deluxe thing like the Storms package, but packaging isn't why I buy CDs and I would rather have this music in an ordinary plastic box than mutton dressed as lamb (as the saying goes).
The booklet is also very minimal. The images are nice but I'm surprised there isn't even as much as a band photo. Though... I already know what they look like ...and all you really need is a set of lyrics, which are all there...
Oh, Peter Knight
And it was a clarinet (Sometimes I amaze myself )
Any Bryan plays an awful lot of keyboards... it's going to need another complete play just to compare everybody!
Well, finding this when I got in the house this evening almost made up for not being at Blakey tonight. Well, I'll be there tomorrow (Hopefully before any of the band have chance to read any rude things I may have inadvertantly said in this review )

You think that a cheaply packaged set of 2 CDs in a jewel case is value for money when we got a full-on lavish package last time? Are you mad? I'm sorry David, but I expect some effort when I spend that sort of money. The other week, I spent £50 on the 9-CD and 1-DVD and massively weighty Robert Plant boxset, now THAT was worth the money.
This effort from Mostly Autumn is, quite frankly, a rip-off.

I think you'll find that Plant and his record company have a lot more money to invest in packaging and the like than MA do, especially as the Plant package is a compilation and therefore there's not a lot of studio time to factor into the budget. The whole point of paying up front for HFOS was help fund the recording costs, and while I can only speak for myself, I don't begrudge that.
ALTHOUGH IT WOULD HELP ME NOT BEGRUDGE IT WERE MY COPY TO HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN DELIVERED!

So, since MA are a smaller operation, I should excuse the fact that I feel ripped off for giving up my money in advance for what I think is a sub-standard (in comparison to previous releases) product?
Sure Plant has the weight of his record company behind him, but Mostly Autumn had nearly £30 from everyone who bought their album in advance and last time, they had that and were able to present a much better value package and a better sounding record.
Marillion, who really pioneered this form of marketing, have always delivered a stellar product to those who paid up in advance and I'll continue to support their cottage industry as I know damn-well that I'll get my money's worth.

I think I explained that I'm not paying for pretty pictures and glossy paper. I'm paying for music. The "effort" came in the band writing and playing the music.
You spent £50 on 9 CDs and a DVD. For £50 I can get all of Bach's Cantatas, which come on 30+ CDs and have some very nice art work on the covers. So if you measure value for money by quantity of disks and quality of glossy paper, sorry but you've been ripped off by Robert Plant.
Value for money is all relative to what you actually want. I'm not expecting that everybody else wants the same as me, which is why I gave the "warning" about the packaging.

I've been ripped off by Robert Plant? No, I knew exactly what I was going to get when I "gave" Planty my money for his box set.
When I gave MA my £30 for what I thought was going to be a professionally presented album, like the "Storms..." album was, and I eventually got a very ordinarily packaged CD in a jewel case, and a CD of music which I thought was, quite frankly, dreadful, then I feel like I've been ripped off.
If you're happy with that, then great and I'm happy for you, but I'm not and it sounds like I'm not alone in my opinion.

That's understandable. If I hadn't liked the music I would have been unhappy too. Luckily I liked it, so I feel I have value for money.
I was disappointed by the music of Storms over Still Water, and no amount of pretty packaging made up for that. If I had said, "oh well, crap album but at least I got another nice picture of the band and a few words that I've already read in the magazine" then that frankly would have been mad!
