Re: The first listen...

Hi ...........another 'nooby', although I am an official site member.

I have to say that (after 10 or so listens) that, for me, HFoS is below the standard of previous MA releases...music as well as the packaging. I find myself now only really 'repeat' listening about 4 tracks from both CD's. I think the mixing is slightly dud too.
The other thing (don't wish to upset anyone with this)...now I know Chris Johnson has slotted in well & is a great musician etc, erm, I just think that another new vocalist with his falsetto style has changed the band - previously you could hear an MA track & know it's them, but it's just, well, different (sorry folks)!!!
.....Gripes aside, I still love those guys & Gals - always will!!!

...Quick question that I hope one of you could enlighten me with: The last time I visited this site I seem to remember a post about the band being dropped from the Marillion weekend/convention due to a 'cash for meet 'n' greet' scandal!! What the...surely not??????

WTF is going on here? We all love the new album in our house, Ive certainly spent more money on stuff which has only managed one or two visits to the CD player, it has been known for me to launch a CD out of the car window! Then rather sheepishly to go find it, to give it a chance! I wont name and shame the band cocerned but it wasn't MA. I only wish we had ordered more copies of HFoS, as every time I go to get it, one of the kids is playing it! At least that frees up some of their earlier stuff emoticon

You know? On my first few listens I had reservations about a couple of tracks, though mainly it was mainly Pocket Watch. Now I am happy to report there isnt a track on this album I would skip. Yes there is more lavishly packaged stuff around but hey, I dont play the package!

Well, since that was mentioned in my last post on this thread, I suppose I'd better field this one!

I'm not going to go into the nitty gritty of the 'Cash for Meet'n'Greet' scandal here: partially because it always seems to sharply divide opinion, partially because I feel it was CRP's fault that it ever happened.

As far as MA getting turned down for the Marillion support slot, there was a lot more to it than just that. For a start, finding accomodation for a six or seven-piece band was quite (a) expensive and (b) problematic for a support slot, especially when most of the other support bands had far less personnel. Secondly, it's on the record that none of Marillion particularly liked MA's output. Thirdly - and most crucially - CRP totally mishandled negotiations by 'leaking' (accidentally on purpose, if you follow me) the contents of private E-mails exchanged between themselves and Marillion's management, in the hope of inspiring MA fans to use 'pester power' to get MA onto the bill. Given everything that had happened previously, this just had the opposite effect and Marillion and their management became suddenly and totally disinterested.

I don't pretend to know the whole story, and I'm sure there's more to it than that, but, broadly speaking, that's why it never got any further.

Heh - trust me, I'm not crying about the fact that CRP have essentially self-destructed... emoticon

The best thing that MA ever did was escape from CRP before it happened, or before CRP screwed up MA's career any further.

Agreed on that. I certainly don't think the association with CRP won the band any friends in the industry........and Rab, you are just bitter with Bob Carruthers because you will never get that hour and a half of your life you spent watching "Chasing The Deer" back!! emoticon lol
