see you in crewe tonight!

was a great nite this time last year, apart from the heather strop!

A spider wanders aimlessly within the warmth of a shadow,
Not the regal creature of border caves,
But the poor, misguided, directionless familiar
of some obscure Scottish poet.

I hope it's a decent night for you. I won't be able to go due to looking after my little lad at home. Where do you live if you are going to Crewe tonight?

Re: The first listen...

The proglord regrets he cannot attend tonights performance, as he has been summoned by the poo-bah to the other realm to listen to his latest project, a musical reinterpretation of the entire history of Coronation Street as an 18 hour suite of instrumental sonnets performed on

• Custom built Hammond C-3 Organ
• RMI Electric Piano & Harpsichord
• 2 x Mini-Moog Synthesizer
• Poly-Moog Synthesizer
• Mellotron 400-D (Vocals/Sound Effects/Vibes)
• Mellotron 400-D (Brass/Strings/Flutes)
• Thomas Goff Harpsichord
• ARP Synthesizer
• Church Organ
• Steinway 9' Grand Piano
• Hammond C3 Organ
• Birotron
• Mander Pipe Organ
• RMI Computer Keyboard
• Harpsichord
• Fender Rhodes 88 Electric Piano
• Hohner Clavinet
• Baldwin Electric Harpsichord

the proglord is particularly looking forward to the part where his wakemanness interprets the sexual liason of Gail "The Human Tortoise" Tyldesly and Ken Barlow using a series of pre-synthesised moans, whimpers, body squelches and front-bum chuffs on his Mini-Moog fed through a wah-wah pedal to simulate the human tortoises unrestrained joy as the shaggy haired guardian reading teacher brings her to the point of no return.....

May the entity grayebb suggest that his wakemanness add a section to his magnum opus that would be performed on the Stylophone?

the prog lord will raise this with the grand pooh-bah but will need to wait for the opportune moment as, as the proglord is sure grayebb is aware, his wakemanness can sometime respond badly to suggestions regarding his creative process and the proglord would not wish to have an electric harpsichord speared into his head by the poo-bah using his telekinetic powers.

No disrespect meant, just a suggestion to the grand lord that may, yet again, push his creative and heavenly genius to even higher levels... If such a thing were possible.

Re: The first listen...

I've had my copy of Heart Full Of Sky for a couple of days now. Having listened to Disc 1 several times now (I haven't even dipped a toe into Disc 2 yet with all the Christmas-related stuff going on - I think that'll be a treat in store over the Christmas break), I feel able to post a few thoughts...

First of all: presentation. Whilst I certainly understand the misgivings of those who expected more lavish packaging, I'm actually not too upset about it coming in a jewel case; at least it'll fit on my shelves! The inlay booklet is slick, though I was surprised at the lack of photos of the band. On the one hand I'm pleased that they're letting the music do the talking, whilst on the other, I'm mildly disturbed that the only members of the band visible at all in the booklet are Bryan and a almost silhouetted Heather. As I've said before, this is more than just the Bryan and Heather Show. At the end of the day, £25 (plus a steep postage fee) is an awful lot to pay for a double album, however it's packaged. As long as the music's good, though, I don't feel like it's a rip-off...

The production... is a little weird, I have to admit. Well, I say production, but to be honest it's the mixing that's weird - taken on their own, the instruments all sound pretty good, there's just not much separation when things get busy. On the plus side, at least they got a decent drum sound this time - something with a bit of punch, unlike the cymbal-heavy cardboard-effect drums heard on Storms.... Things do tend to jump out and overwhelm the mix at the oddest times, and sometimes it's hard to hear the vocals clearly when there's a lot going on. Overall, though, I've heard a lot worse. Given the time constraints involved in recording and mixing a double album of new material, I'm actually surprised it's as good as it is!

As for the songs on Disc 1... Things get underway in real style with Fading Colours - I'd have to say this is my favourite track so far, after four or five hearings. It's memorable, there's some nice soloing, Heather's in good voice, the man Johnson seems to have settled in nicely. Half The World is pretty good, too - classic Autumn.

Unfortunately, Pocket Watch is a real stinker. It's not the lack of some of the typical Mostly trademarks: I'm actually always secretly pleased when they try something a little off-the-wall. No, it's the fact that after four or five hearings, I still can't remember the tune, Bryan's vocals are beyond laboured, and the lyrics are utterly ridiculous - surely the worst MA have committed to an album to date. The only good thing about it is that it's over rather quickly!

Things are back on track with Blue Light - if this is a sample of what's to come from Mr Johnson, I hope they give him more to do. Fabulous stuff, and Heather in particular shines here. Some really nice work from Chris & Bryan, too.

I'm undecided about Walk With A Storm. It's a bit disjointed, but on the other hand, the jig-inspired second half is a belter. The lyrics are a little weak, but I can live with that. I think this one will be a grower and needs a few more listens!

More later...
