The first listen...

The album doesn't fade in with the Storms Over Still Water fade-out, does it? emoticon

It's probably a bad idea to write this instead of concentrating on the music, but oh well...

Fading Colours
The dum-dum-dum-dum bit sounds like something else but I can't think what... Then it has a Ritchie Blackmore eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww and turns into... Eyes of the World, I think? Except I like Heather's voice better than Graham Bonnet.

It's not a great song on first listen, but I can't think of anything bad to say about it... and it gets extra points for quoting the Wizard of Oz.

Oooo I like the last bit.

Half a World
I wondered if I would be able to tell who had written what without reading the book first but I don't have a clue so far. I'll go out on a limb and say that Heather wrote this one, and you can all laugh at me if I'm wrong emoticon

I like it. Sounds like a Passengers song.

Pocket Watch
I remember this one from the York gig. It's a weird one and I can't make up my mind about it.

It sounds like one of the modern clone band songs. You know... one of those bands that all sound the same band everyone under the age of 30 thinks are the best things to ever hit music, like, ever.

Except it has a better chorus.

Actually it has a great chorus. It's like a Bon Jovi chorus in a clone band song. What a cool idea. I predict a top 10 hit.

Honestly, it's grown on me over the course of a single play. How weird is that? emoticon

Is this Heather singing?

Help, I think I'm in an alternate universe emoticon

Ok, best song of the album so far. I just can't figure out what it's doing emoticon

Walk with a Storm
Already thought this was one of the best songs from York... still like it on the CD...

It's got a real violin (Bryan seemd to be emulating a violin at York... not sure if the real violin is better... seems to have lost the flute from the instrumental part... um... there could also be a Hammond organ, or something close, is that Chris Johnson?

Well, that was weird.

Ghost
Things I like about this song:
1) The whispery bit
2) It's got a Riders-of-Rohan feel
3) ELO-style vocals. (Yes, honestly, that's what it sounds like emoticon )
Oh, just got to the...
4) Guitar solo
5) Doesn't end the way you expect it to end
This is another best song of the album.

Broken
Heather singing in a style which I thiink really suits her...

Very minimalist instrumentation.

I think I should be paying more attention to the lyrics emoticon

Silver Glass
I recognised this instantly from the piano intro... that's a good sign because after one live listen it's usually only obvious riffs and choruses that stick in my mind.

I still love this song.

Not just the beautiful melody, but the whole way the song is constructed... different... now there's a drum crash and a loud repeat of the chorus, and normally that would be completely predictable in a "slow rock song" and I'd be going, booo, cliché, but here it's unexpected because the whole song has been unpredictable. And now here's a nice tailing-off intrumental bit and,

whoops, next song already

Dreaming
Dum dum dum dum dada
Dum dum dum dum dada da da da
da d a da da da
da da da
la la la
ohh ohhh it's falling down
dum dum dum dum dumdum dum udmda da dada
la la
I can't think of anything constructinve to say aboput this and it's npot easy to type because i'm bounc8ng up and down and going dum dum dum dum dada

I question the wisdom of giving a serious subject such a happy, upbeat song. But apart from that, I can't help loving it. Look, it's going... dum dum dum dum dada

dum dum dum dum dada

dum dum dum dum dada
ohhh ohhh we were dreaming
and there isn't a side of the road anymore...
see it's musically so infectuous and then I think she's talking about the end of the world or something... it's incongruous. I'll probably read the lyrics and realise I've completely misunderstood it, but actually I don't care. Sorry, babbling a bit now. I think I'll take a break before I listen to disc 2...

laaa laaa laaa laaa I just love songs that go laaa laaa laaa laaa laaa laaaaaaaa

 emoticon
