Lisa Is Finally Free!!!
Okay, as a fan of Lisa, I have to admit I'm ecstatic that Lisa is now a solo artist. It was always so unfair that the band was introduced as 'Damien Rice' instead of 'Lisa Hannigan & Damien Rice'. Damien Rice is a great songwriter, but if Lisa sang all his songs alone, I'd be in Heaven. To me, Damien Rice without Lisa is just another Ryan Adams, James Blunt, David Gray, etc. I just prefer female vocalists, and Lisa is exceptional.
Damien must've seen the writing on the wall years ago. Everyone took notice of Lisa despite the fact that she literally hid in the background during performances. And with Damien's ego, he probably wanted to be one to initiate the break-up. Damien is talented, and he'll do fine without Lisa. However, to think that Lisa did not have a big impact on his success and draw a large fan base for him is absurd. But you wouldn't know this by reading his recent press release.
I'm really looking forward to Lisa's solo effort, although I'm a bit worried about her choices for songs. Her voice will take her far, but she should pick her songs carefully. (I doubt Lisa will write her own songs. She'll probably just pick and choose songwriters and songs, and put together a CD.) It's just that I keep thinking about Isobel Campbell of Belle & Sebastian. Isobel also has an angelic voice like Lisa. She left Belle & Sebastian and came out with a few lackluster CDs while B & S didn't seem to miss a beat and is still very successful.
Lisa has a voice for Jazz and Blues, but I hope she goes pop since I don't like Jazz/Blues. I really like that pop song, 'Some Surprise', with Gary Lightbody, and I think she can be successful going the pop/folk-rock route.

Re: Lisa Is Finally Free!!!
I believe that her voice is not just suited to blues and jazz although she does seem to like singing that kind of stuff based on the videos I seen on youtube.
I am ashamed to say I did not know Lisa existed until about 2 weeks ago, but I had heard of Damien Rice before and never thought much of his voice. You echo my thoughts when you take issue with him touring as Damien Rice and seemingly getting the credit for Lisa's talents as well.
I think she can be a massive star if she gets the right songs. Listening to the emotion she gets into her songs is special beyond words, and sends shivers down my back.
Like I say I have only just found out about Lisa, but I am a fan already and can't wait to hear more from her.

Re: Lisa Is Finally Free!!!
What do you mean she is "free"? Please clarify. i am new to this inside-information world. as far as i can see, Lisa Hannigan has always been free, free to sing with D.Rice, free to sing with others, free to perform with her theatre group, free to compose, dance, form her own band, master Kolam, translate James Joyce into Aramaic, become a kendo sensei.
I do hope she continues to back up Damian Rice when it suits her fancy. Though some of you seem to be deaf to the brilliance of his songs, it is true that without Lisa's presence Rice's interpretation of some of those works would be diminished.
As for Lisa´s future as a soloist, I believe that she can sing anything, she is a remarkable artist, For example her renditions of gritty blues and bebop rarities are truly moving. More than any popular Western white, black, caramel female singer of the last decade, Lisa is the musical grandaughter of Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Victoria Spivey, Billie Holliday. So, I hope she continues to experiment with the great American songbook that encompasses Delta work songs no less than Cole Porter. Lisa´s voice does not limit her, it frees her. And why not encourage her songwriting? Rest assured that countless musical masterpieces abide within Lisa Hannigan. Whether she summons them forth or not...well she is at liberty to decide that, no?

I wish I was deaf when I listen to him singing.
His songs might be OK with someone else singing them, but he just isn't that good.

Re: Lisa Is Finally Free!!!
Just because Damien sings in his own style doesnt mean he has any less talent that the more popular singers, which frankly i mostly find dull and devoid of any emotion. You shouldnt be so closed minded, Damiens voice at times might not sound pleasant, but it is because what he is singing about isnt 'pleasant'. Often he sings with real raw emotion that if you only listen you'll realise that his is one of the most beautiful, honest voices out there. People are in denial of the intensity emotions can reach, most people wouldnt dare to try and convey that in their songs, listening to Damien's songs is liberating not deafening:P. For the same reason i love Lisa's voice. She can put more emotion into a sentence than anyone ive heard, and does it stunningly. It is food for the soul.
To me it sounds like you dont want to be deaf, you are already deaf to the deeper meaning and emotion contained within good music. Please try and listen closer.
Maybe im wrong, but i couldn't let someone say that about Damiens music.

Re: Lisa Is Finally Free!!!
I would like to write something here with the best intentions because I love the work Lisa Hannigan and Damien Rice performed together. And yes I have loved Lisa performing Cannonball solo and recognized her great talent while performing "Be my husband" by Nina Simone and her version of the great Nick Drake song: "Courting blues".
But I think there has been a natural magic between both artists: "9 crimes" is Lisa and Damien, the blower's daughter too.
It is not that important to give more credits to the one or the other. I'm pretty sure both persons will surprise us again in the future and I thank both artists with the whole of my heart for the beauty they have put together in song.
Lisa Hannigan, Damien Rice, Chan Marshall (Cat Power), Beth Gibbons, Polly Jean Harvey, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Leo Ferré, Leonard Cohen, Nina Simone, My Brightest Diamond, Björk, Johnny Cash, Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell, Nico, ... they are a family somehow.

Re: Lisa Is Finally Free!!!
I do not create thus. Lisa she is a very good singer, but it is necessary to think that thanks to the songs of Damien the voice of her emphasized. I am not against Lisa, for nothing, but it does not seem well to me that one says that the ego of Damien has affected this. Exactly he who coat the talent of Lisa. You see it like a gain for music, I I see it like a lamentable loss, so equal to beatles.

Re: Lisa Is Finally Free!!!
Lisa and Damien had a chemistry, it's true, but it would be a mistake to think it was the only chemistry that might work for her. He definitely comes across as a depressive egoist in his music (I'm not saying he is, just that his music conveys that) and she can connect to that very well. She always brings that emotion of a woman watching someone she cares about suffer. She can put more sorrow and love in her voice than just about anyone I've ever heard, and that plays well with the depression, anger and insecurity in Damien's music (again, not talking about him personally). I think all young men can relate to the things Damien conveys, and Lisa's responses to those things endear her to them.
However, she has more range than that, emotionally and musically, and for that reason, I'm glad to see her go solo. I think she stuns us not just with her voice, but with what she shows of herself through her music, so I'd like to see more of the music she chooses to make.
