posticon REVIEW: The Sunday Times Lisa Hannigan: Sea Sew

****

If you know Damien Rice’s O or 9 albums, then you already love Lisa Hannigan’s voice. (I don’t know anyone who has those records who doesn’t love the voice of Rice’s backing singer.) But she is Rice’s backing singer no more. Hannigan’s solo debut lets that voice loose on songs that tend to have a little more bounce and a little less angst in them than Rice’s. The delightful home-made album sleeve — including hand-stitched lyrics by Hannigan herself — neatly encapsulates the cheery, home-made feel of the music. The album’s title is explained by the cover and a lyrical obsession with the sea that rivals that of Laura Veirs; musically, though, it’s Kristin Hersh who provides the template for the distinctive melodies of stunning songs such as An Ocean and a Rock, and I Don’t Know.
