Pearl: a lethal rescued from abusive conditions in a pet store

Pearl is a rescued guinea pig. However, her story is different from some of the other guinea pigs in that she is a special-needs guinea pig, with immediate medical needs, who was rescued from abusive and neglectful conditions in a pet store.

Pearl's special medical condition is that she is a lethal. A lethal is the result of a Roan bred to Roan or a Dalmatian bred to Dalmatian. The all white, pink-eyed guinea pigs often have deformities and medical problems such as malocclusion and blindness. (Although all lethals are pink-eyed whites, not all pink-eyed whites are lethals.) Many times they do not live very long, however, she is doing quite well with the TLC that she received initially from Angel, who rescued her, and from Megan, her current caretaker. More information about Pearl may be found in her photo album and on her website.

Hi Kathy,

I was her previous Caretaker. I hear that she is doing wonderful, she is over 500 grams now, she still don't like to get her teeth trimmed at all.

she has a new buddy named Honey who now lives with her I believe. She meets with 4 other sows during play time at least every day.

Pearl has her new mummie controlled now. Everytime she would make the critical care mix, she starts shrieking for it like crazy and starts running around until she gets it.

I will try my best to update as much as I can from Megan her new mummie.

Kathy, Thank you for putting this up. I truly appreciate everyone learn about lethals and what happens to them.

Thanks for the update, Angel. She sounds like she's still doing great with all of the TLC that she gets. emoticon

Hi there,

I am Pearlie's privileged piggy slave. She is doing well and now weighs 582g. She sometimes will snuggle with a member of my herd, but has yet to form any truly close friendships. She must miss her former cagemate.

We trim her incisors every 2 weeks or so, and thankfully she is still healthy. She currently prefers normal piggy food to her mush... so I take that as a good sign. emoticon

She does look very healthy and sweet in the photo. emoticon However, in August 2007 Pearl passed away. "She had been battling infections for three months and never really over came it. The infection had spread to her eyes and ears where her ears would bleed from a neurological damage from the infection."

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bring back sad memories.

Pearl was Angel's pig that she rescued.
