Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)
I’d like to ask somebody who has ever driven in Korea…..Is it true that there is an exclusive “pull over “ lane in their traffic system? You never see other cars in this lane…..It doesn’t seem like an effective way to utilize roads……Or is it just in K-dramas that we see this?
Sua can be very annoying, self centered, childish,.. etc….But I have to say that she is a pretty honest, straight forward person. She lets you know exactly what’s on her mind.. She might be a one faced pain in the butt, but she is NO two faced liar like her husband, and most of the characters on this show….. And I agree with our gentlemen on board that Sua is not a ugly duckling…What she needs is some serious spanking........ And I actually think the deceiving Seongjae doesn’t deserve her!

Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)
curly carrot:
You make an interesting comparison between the Seonjae/Jiyeong split and the Dalhyeon/Miae divorce. In your view, the instigators (Seonjae and Miae) were motivated by ambition and opportunity for personal advancement. Their actions caused their discarded partners (Jiyeong and Dalhyeon) to look elsewhere for comfort and renewal. Maturation, however, will cause the instigators to seek reconciliation, thereby restoring the balance.
But there’s a big difference between the unsuspecting catalysts (Ujin and Sonya). Ujin is your standard issue heroic fireman who will unhesitatingly charge into burning buildings to rescue fair maiden even if his only reward is a rapturous sigh. He’s an appealing fellow, although a little too square jawed for my tastes. A little leavening would be a welcome upgrade.
But Sonya is a foreigner. No matter how good and suitable she may be as prospective wife and stepmother, she can’t crack prejudice. It’s true that no character in the drama has raised the issue. In fact, such a union received positive reviews from Dalhyeon’s partner and from Miae herself before she knew the identity of the principals. But the audience has yet to be heard from. When it has, Sonya’s fate will be sealed. I suspect that she will either die of illness or be sent back to Kazakhstan to tend to her ailing father.

Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)
Pleiad, agreed.
I haven't looked into it yet but perhaps there is a growing population of foreigners in Korea that are considering marriage with natives thus sparking this topic or perhaps it is just a perk of Eva's having been a regular on the foreign girls "chatting" program (don't know the name of it)
In what I would consider a perfect world, cultural barriers for marriage and relationships would not be present. Of course within the relationship, instruction, understanding and acceptance of the differing cultures, their expectations, traditions, etc. would be a must. From my limited experience with multi-cultural unions, it has been the attraction of the culture and the lived experience that has drawn people together in the first place. Do you understand what I mean?

I can’t answer your question about “pull over” lanes (I imagine you’re referring to what we call “turnouts”). But I suspect it’s a K-drama convention and is so much else connected with driving, traffic and parking. Consider the following:
Although Seoul is notorious for its traffic jams, the only time our characters get stuck is when the story line calls for it. Otherwise it’s zip zip zip.
There’s always a parking space available directly in front of the building and door.
Korean cars don’t have power steering. Otherwise, whenever a character decides to change directions by yanking on the steering wheel, the next sound we would hear would be of metal crunching.
I wonder if Korean cars have any audio equipment. Unless there’s a news bulletin pertaining to the story or some special song, we never hear a radio or CD.
Not many Koreans use buses. We never see a crowded one.
If there’s no traffic on the streets and the buses are nearly empty, either few people work in Seoul or its population is not nearly as large as most censuses indicate. I think that the latter must be the case since there seems to be only one hospital, department store, fancy restaurant, amusement park, and all other manner of public facility. How else to account for the characters constantly bumping into each other, especially at the end of an episode?

Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)
Miae's interest in her ex-husband seems to me to largely a matter of lust. She would not be the first woman to be interested in dating, not remarrying, her ex-husband. I am hoping that Miae's future is to become successful as an actress, meet a younger and Ujin like namja chinggu and see Chan occasionally when Dalhyeon and Sonya drop him off.

K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)
Sonya seems sincerely concerned about Chan and his needs. Miae is a toxic person. She likes to meddle in things and situations that are really none of her business. The reason Miae likes to attack and scream and meddle is not because she loves her family members, it is an outlet for her own lack of control in her own life. Attacking Sua, yelling at Mrs. Na and accepting money in her niece's name... how did it help? It caused more embarrasment and pain for her family. At the same time she felt entitled to use that money for her own personal pleasure (her needs come first in her mind).
If she would reconcile with her ex-husband she would be a good wife and mother until she receives the first phone call telling her that she can audition for a role in a show. Then she would take off again. Miae is a very selfish woman. She doesn't work to earn money to pay her own expenses or to help with Chan's expenses. Unfortunately, Chan will always yearn for his mother's love and attention. That is often what happens in a child's relationship with a neglectful and/or abusive parent. Sonya is definately better parent material. She would provide Chan with a mature caring mother who would put Chan first in her priorities and provide a family life that would give him the security that he has missed so far.
