Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)
We know from the KBS synopsis, reproduced as the first entry in this thread, that “in the world where money seems to be the power, Baek-ho’s quest for love contrasts to Seon-jae’s ambitious ascent and subsequent downfall.” Love versus money: what could be more basic and more definitive?
Now Seonjae has been thoroughly execrated in these pages: how dare he forswear love for money! And what a tacky way to dump his sweetheart! It wasn’t too many episodes ago that he had suggested marriage. So whatever downfall he will subsequently suffer is just deserts. So say we one, so say we all.
And yet it’s possible that Seonjae has fooled us all. He’s willing to absorb opprobrium and risk the loss of his beloved Jiyeong in executing a wily scheme based on shrewd psychological profiling of the key players in his drama: Sua and her grandmother, his own mother, and Jiyeong’s father and hair pulling aunt. (He must feel supremely confident in Jiyeong’s undying love to consider the caper in the first place.)
He needed a spot of money fast to tide him over an unpleasant fund crisis. And he needs a bundle so he wouldn’t have to worry about making house payments for the rest of his working life. What better way to fatten his wallet than soaking the rich? What better way to get his silly mother off his back than befuddling the gullible? And what better way to convince everyone of his sincerity than outraging the upright?
So far he’s done admirably. He was able to weather the fund crisis. He’s charmed all his prospective in-laws (except the baffled Baekho). His mother resides in seventh heaven (except when she goes to a fancy restaurant in a fur stole). And the Hwang family has been thoroughly unnerved (except the hell hound Miae).
How long will he need to remain married to Sua? In other words, how long will his time in purgatory be? Let’s count the steps in Sua’s prospective transformation. First, as a filial son, Seonjae must bring his bride to live in the family’s ancestral condo. Second, she must learn how to be a dutiful daughter-in-law by learning the family rites and rituals (how to cook and clear the dishes). Third, she’ll need to become accustomed to an often tardy husband who, after all, is an up and coming fund manager. As a side point, since Sua is just out for a good time, he won’t have to worry about unwanted kids screaming up the place and of course upsetting his plans.
Really, his time in purgatory is a function of how soon Sua blows up, rushes “home,” and demands that he join her there or find a place of their own. There’s only one other possibility: divorce. By then, if Seonjae has any brains at all, he will have stashed away a fair amount of loot. Now all he need do is provoke Sua one more time and she’ll dash off to set the divorce in motion. Seonjae, with a great show of reluctance, will add his chop, and his grand scheme will have succeeded.
Succeeded, that is, only if Jiyeong remains available. The best way to keep tabs on her is to employ the services of a spy. One possibility is Miae who, as an aspiring actress, could be bribed with a promise of a part in a movie a fund he’s managing is planning to produce. But she’s highly unpredictable. He could hire a loquacious miss to bring a dog to the vet office for a monthly grooming. Baekho and Danpung are each possibilities, but they have their own romances to tend to. But he’s certain to find someone reliable. Besides his wait depends on Sua’s staying power, not one of her long suits.
Finally, he must win back both Jiyeong and her father. After a suitable period of somber repentance, that shouldn’t be too difficult. Even his mother, completely frazzled by her daily rows with Sua, will accept any fresh face.
Don’t you think this narrative is far more pleasing than a “subsequent downfall?”

Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)
so Ji-yeong took the sleeping pills anyway! that is being s#*&*d!!!
Tension between Songjae and Baekho! Songjae looks more nervous! I'm glad Ji-yeong's father was able to say something to Dongji! That plea was so senseless - brutal! Dongji is so scared of her surroundings and wasn't even thinking!
Danpung!!! Forget her! Does she really have a relationship with that doctor?
Seems like the Bonjours are all scared of Miae! Wonder what's gonna happen if father Bonjour finds out the truth!!
BTW - was watching some episodes of Full House - Ji-yeong was there! She's the wife of Han Ji-eun's friend!!

Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)
-Miae & Sua recognize each other & Sua tells her grandma to get Miae out of their house. Miae tells Sua off again but Dongji arrives & takes Miae out, without seeing Chan. Dongji is sympathic to Miae's concerns but Miae still chew her out for knowing about Jiyeong & not doing anything. Miae goes home & tells Dallae & Jiyeong's dad about Seonjae marrying Dongji's DIL but Jiyeong's dad tells Miae that Dongji didn't do it intentionally. Miae regrets not having pulled Sua's hair again...so do I, LOL!!
-One of the co-workers puts up a promotional poster of Danpung & Baekho for the newlywed campaign, in the office, and Danpung takes it down...saying it's disruptive. Yeah, sure!! They head out of the office & the doctor is looking at the poster in the lobby. You can tell how much it bothers him but he tries to "play it off" with Danpung & says that he's accepting it as just work. He also says that Baekho is his friend & he wouldn't do that. Think he's trying to convince himself or what Meanwhile, Baekho goes back to the office & puts up the poster, admiring what others say...about how good Danpung & him look together. But he takes the poster down at the end!!
-Seonjae goes to pick up Sua, for their meeting with his parents & greets Sua's family but Baekho is very cool toward Seonjae & vice versa, even though Baekho wishes them well.
-Jiyeong is having trouble sleeping & goes to a pharmacy to get some sleeping pills. The pharmacist warns her against taking too many. She gets a call from her dad & tells him that she's sorry & will return the next day. They agree to dinner & a movie "date" when she gets back. Dallae is concerned about Jiyeong & asks a neighbor to check on Jiyeong the next morning but, sure enough, she had trouble sleeping again & took too many more pills & doesn't wake up!!
-Dongji meets Jiyeong's dad for coffee & asks him to, basically, say nothing about the marriage of Seonjae & Sua and to make sure that Miae doesn't cause any problems!! He doesn't really like that idea, when he gets the call about Jiyeong!!
I REALLY can't stand that BRAT, Sua!! She makes Eun-Ju (High as the sky, Wide as the earth), who I didn't like at the beginning, look like a SWEETHEART!! I also can't stand how "happy" Seonjae's mom is, about Sua becoming her DIL I know that Jiyeong should forget about Seonjae & move on but the break-up was really hard on her and I just hope she's ok...I really do like her character & hope she gets some happiness soon!! Try as they might, to fight it, the mutual attraction between Danpung & Baekho is growing!!

K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)
I really don't like Seonjae's mom, she is such annoying person, I don't know how can her husband handle her for so long. Just hope that after Seonjae marry with Sua, she will show the real her or Sua will show her real her. then they both could not stand each other, but then I think Seonjae will move in with Sua, I guess they never hate each other, they always can act like each other, every time mil visited or dil visited. I really don't care about Seonjae much as Baekho and Danpung more, I think this pair is more interesting and fun.

Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)
I'm glad that so many are enjoying this drama now. We've seen about 46 episodes in my area and it seems that Baekho'a exaggerated facial expressions that turned many off have toned down considerably. I remember when PIH started, an awful lot of viewers were totally annoyed with Gukhwa's grimacing and didn't care for the program because of her. By the end of the drama, Gukhwa had endeared herself to just about everyone. Yunhu, too, started out unappealing and ended up irrestistable.
I'm reluctant to make predictions because the west coast is at least 2 weeks ahead and so much further along in the plot, but I still think Seonjae and Jiyeong will end up together. But I think that the other vet in their business will assume a part in her life, temporarily. He's an eligible single man and is fond of her, and I feel she wll turn to him on the rebound.
It's pretty obvious that Baekho and Danpung will also become a couple, but her realtionship with the boy doctor is becoming more and more solid, and I can't fathom how they will get him out of the picture. Maybe a fatal illness. or a fight to the finish wirh Baekho. Maybe he'll be incarcinated for malpractice, being so impassioned with Danpung that he absently fashions a replica of her nose onto the face of an old fisherman whose own nose
was bitten off by a mudfish. Or maybe he'll be exposed as an imposter and sent back to his junior high school class.
If Sua and Seonjae do break up, his dear mother can be compensated by having her daughter marry the Bonjour (step)son.

i guess you guys are more close in episodes to me than the East coast people. at one point i had to rented all the tapes available to catch up. this series is addicting. i really like a lot of the characters, and the korean women, boy are they hot. i think i'm up to episode 83. on tv out here they may be on ep 54. anyone else ahead like i am, it makes everyday a struggle, once i found out i could rent it. plus the one in LA cuts out a few minutes due to commercials....

I always wonder why the East Coast is sooo far ahead for us on the West but you are right, sIash...Korean women are a major reason why I got hooked on K-dramas in the first place But, as I watch more, I like the plots & characters!!
Who is your favorite on the drama, sIash?? I like Danpung, Jiyeong, Sujeong (Baekho's girlfriend), one of the co-workers in Danpung's office (the one who was supposed to be Baekho's "newlywed" for the promo) & Miae!!

Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)
-Dongji is very upset with the news of Jiyeong & when she tells Baekho, he rushes off to find her, in Sua's car!!
-Sua meets Seonjae's parents, bringing expensive gifts for them. Seonjae's dad is not happy & tells Sua so He tells her that a simple life is proper for them. Sua, that brat, seems upset his comments. Can't stand how much Seonjae's mom "caters" to Sua.
-Jiyeong's dad & aunts arrive at the hospital to see her & Baekho arrives at the same time. She is unconscious but the doctor says she'll be ok. She starts mumbling for Seonjae & Miae gets upset. Baekho decides to call Seonjae & tell him to come to the hospital but Seonjae is with Sua & his family & hangs up on Baekho, who decides to come to Seoul & drag Seonjae to the hospital, if needed!! Jiyeong wakes up & wonders why everybody is there. Miae asks her why she can't forget Seonjae & says she will kill her if she scares them like that again. They get home & Jiyeong says she's sorry, to the family. Her dad goes to his room & talks to a picture of Jiyeong's mother, saying, "Please don't take her from me"! Jiyeong walks in on him & hugs him, apologizing & crying how sorry she is!!
-Baekho heads back & calls Seonjae but he doesn't answer. He then calls Sua, who tells him that Seonjae is taking her home. Sua & Seonjae notice her car missing but don't think much of it and Sua heads in. Baekho shows up & almost crashes into Seonjae's car. He drags Seonjae out of his car, telling him what happened to Jiyeong. But Seonjae says that he's not going to see her...what a MAJOR butthead ...& they fight!! At first, Baekho is winning but Seonjae beats him up, before stopping & heading off.
-Seonjae arrives at home, drunk, right in front of his mom and is helped by his dad & Danpung to his room. He starts mumbling, "I'm sorry, Jiyeong"!! He wakes up the next day & doesn't remember anything. Baekho has breakfast with the family & the grandma says he shouldn't fight at his age, for fear of being sued.
-Baekho heads to work, protecting his face with the muffler that Sujeong gave him, but Danpung runs into him at the coffee machine in the office & notices his face. She touches his face to see how bad it is & the reaction on Baekho's face is priceless. He then grabs her hand & her reaction is also priceless but then the rest of the office gang arrive & notice that Baekho & Danpung are "holding hands"!!
The preview seems to show Jiyeong's continuing to struggle with her emotions, while going through pictures of Seonjae & her!! I like Jiyeong a lot but her dependence on that jerk is getting thin on me!! I hope she gets over him soon but the only person that can do that, in my opinion, is Baekho...who I'd like to see with Danpung!!
