Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)

As was mentioned by someone else, Seonjae seems a lot like his mother when it comes to desire for social and financial status. Those tendencies seem to out weigh and push to the side the moral aspects of various situations.

I would be surprised if Jiyeong is pregnant, too, because she is such a "proper" young woman. But that is what the writers want us to think and to not expect this turn of events. Regardless of how proper Jiyeong may be, she was with her fiancé (whom she's crazy in love with), and started getting it on with some rather serious kissing on the beach. It isn't exactly unheard of that the most proper of girls would go all the way—especially since she stayed out all night with Seonjae. In the car, no less. They'd have to keep warm somehow! emoticon And then he did fall asleep—apparently she didn't. Why in the world wouldn't he have taken her home at a decent hour? I forgot, was there some valid reason they couldn't get back home?

Bottom line, I can see it going either way on this one.

wow, I guess things have picked up. The show has gotten more interesting. Now the characters and storyline are becoming more fleshed out and the program is more watchable.
Seonjae finally breaking off with Jiyeong was a relief. I know Jiyeong must be in terrible shock and hurt but it is so frustrating that she is so clingy and not strong enough to get mad at Seonjae. She needn't do anything to change for him, it is his problem.
Miae telling off Seonjae's mom was great and tonight's episode where she seems to tell off Seonjae should be interesting. I'm glad MIL's ring was found and she feels guilty about blaming Baekho's uncle.

Pandapop you are right about the characters not being one dimensional. Makes them much more interesting and watchable.

nchristi, the pregnancy angle does provide an unexpected twist. I hope it isn't true though.

Seems we agree, pandapop!!

I LOVED how Miae told off Seonjae & his mom and I agree that I can't see Jiyeong wounding up pregnant. I do see Jiyeong finding it out to let go of Seonjae. Not sure about the "law issue" that Miae brought up, about it being illegal to "promise" marriage & then breaking up with somebody??

Think Danpung & Baekho seem to be getting closer & liked how Dongji's MIL took Chan to see Dalhyeon & telling him to come back to the house. Guess she's not as cold as I thought she was.

Was that a bribe that Seonjae's mom was offering Jiyeong at the end of the show? SOOO uncool.

I hope Jiyeong is pregnant. They spent the night together altho we only saw them sitting on the beach. It will be interesting if she ends up pregnant. What a mess for Seonjae & his greedy Mom and spoled brat Sua.
I don't want Danpung to end up with Baekho but I'm sure she will. It's like PIH where the Iceman fell for that high school graduate janitress.

lex07, in Korea, it's called marriage fraud, and people do sue over broken promises. Seonjae had promised to marry Jiyeong, and certainly a pregnancy would be even more proof that the two were a couple, so Jiyeong's family may have the law on their side. After all, in status-driven Korea, marriage to the son of a government official is a step up.. This gambit has appeared in the dramas before.

Hey, nsheldon, this reminds me of Yellow Handkerchief, right? Girl crazy for guy, they spend the day together, she gets pregnant, he leaves her for wealthy girl!

Seonjae's mom has no clue what she's letting herself in for. Can you imagine having Sua for a DIL???

Marriage fraud?? I had no idea there was such a law anywhere. Thanks for the explanation, hyena. It certainly brings a whole new perspective to the situation, since it's the first K-drama I've seen that this kind of thing happen.

As for Sua as a DIL, that's a scary thought, though Seonjae's mom & her seem to really like each other. Anyway, based on previous dramas I've seen, I'm expect that by the end of the show, we will see a totally different & "sweet" Sua (i.e., remember Eun-Joo in "High as the Sky, Wider than the Earth")

hyena,

You are right about the marriage law thing. I am trying to remember what the legal term was in UK. If a man proposes marriage and gives a ring then that is considered a legal agreement for marriage. Only the two people concerned can break this by mutual agreement.
I certainly hope that Jiyeong is not pregnant... that is such a trite situation. I think that it would be much more interesting if her family took to the law and made a big problem for the stupid mother. I think the father will have a fit and upset the whole applecart if it goes this way. It really does not need a pregnancy...altho this would certainly stop any marriage plans for Sua. Her grandma would see to that.

I had a thought....mercy me!!!

I think there a law called 'Breach of Promise' that can apply to an agreement for marriage. If the man proposes and gives a ring that is considered a legal contract. He cannot break this on a whim. However. it seems this does not aply legally to the woman. Nevertheless, if she does break her engagement without a very strong and publicly available reason, then her social status is considerebly shaken. Dowries can be involved especially within the realms of wealth and estates.

I missed last nite's episode but didn't feel so bad about it - considering I now hate Songjae for his selfish choice.

Songjae's mom and Sua? They only get along now 'coz Sua wanted Songjae so bad for a husband. I bet as soon as they get married, Songjae will hear a lot of heartache from her mother regarding her new daughter-in-law. I am so looking forward to that event!

Remember Winter Sonata? Didn't Yujin break-off with Sang-hyuk because of Min-yeong? Doing such a thing would put the family into shame! With Likable, it is not Songjae's family but Jiyeong's family who'll be suffering from shame.

Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)

Here are some of the highlights (what I can remember) from Fiday's episode, but not in order as they appeared.

Chan comes downstairs in summer clothing and is heading out. Grams stops him—You'll freeze to death in those clothes. The boy misses his father and is going to look for him. Grams doesn't want him to leave, but Chan starts crying loudly. Grams decides to personally take him to his father.

Grams and Chan show up at the Events shop; Dalhyeon is unshaven but delighted to see his son... shocked to see Grams with him. She tells Dalhyeon to come home, but he refuses, saying he can't face her, living off of her there. We hear Grams think "At least he knows it." She doesn't apologize, of course, for falsely accusing him, but she makes it easier for him, saying she found the ring and it was all a case of "bad luck." For the boy's sake she wants Dalhyeon to return. He says "yes." It was nice to see Grams softening up. Little by little...

After seeing Friday night's episode, I'm wondering if this pregnancy business is a red herring. Jiyeong sits in a prolonged daze in her room, then runs to the kitchen lickity split and starts rustling up a big bowl of food and stuffing it into her face. This behavior is what makes Elder Aunt wonder to Miae if Jiyeong is pregnant.

It won't surprise me at all if Jiyeong is not pregnant, but suffering from TG's (Sky/Earth) malady—false pregnancy. She is so distressed that she's kind of spacing out. Maybe that will be the next event—Jiyeong will have a mental breakdown of sorts, courtesy of Mr. Seonjae.

In the car with Seonjae, Sua discovers the red gift bag from Jiyeong. She doesn't see that it is the handknitted vest, but Sua does recognize the bag as the one Jiyeong was holding when they all met up in the lobby at Seonjae's office. Seonjae says it is nothing and puts it in the back seat. Sua knows, but she lets it go. Jiyeong is calling Seonjae. He takes the battery out of his phone.

Baekho and Dan have to go on another emergency product run. This time in a semi-large truck. It's okay... Baekho was a truck driver in the army.

After Miae tells off Seonjae at work and throws his stuff off the desk, she tells him she's not going to let this go. As she leaves, a bunch of his co-workers are standing in his doorway, staring at her. "What are you staring at?! Stare at that jerk who dumped an innocent girl."

As Miae leaves the building, she comes across his mother in the lobby. Mom tries to ignore Miae but Miae doesn't put up with that and they go to a café. Miae tells Mom Seonjae's actions towards Jiyeong are illegal and she not going to give him a pass on it. Mom is shocked. Miae chides her: "You're a Vice-Minister's wife. Don't you even know the law?!" Mom is worried.

Seonjae comes home early with a headache and goes to bed. Can't take all the stress, I guess. The next morning Seonjae can't eat and is upset. Mom is all aflutter, announcing that Sua's family wants to meet with SJ. Don asks, "Does this mean they're getting married?" "Yes," Mom says giddily. SJ keeps looking down. Dad isn't happy at all, knowing this deal stinks.

Mom goes to meet with Jiyeong, who looks bedraggled, her coat hanging askew on her. "You look awful," says Mom. She pushes a packet of money across the table at Jiyeong, who is in disbelief. Fadeout...
