Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)

Italiansoul, you hit the nail right on the head. This drama is "trite, boring, and annoying." I keep trying to get interested in this one, but I feel as though it's going from bad to worse. I'm disliking more and more characters here—not to mention the totally boring storylines.

Dongji - She's turned me totally off living her whole life seeking to please her MIL—whose tantrums rival those of a two-year old. What a turn-off watching Dongji constantly saying "That's not it" to Mansu, as she tries to choreograph both his and Beakho's behavior.

Mansu - I find him likable and trying to do what's right but he's thwarted at every turn by the controlling women surrounding him. If I hear him say one more time "Gee mother," I'm going to scream.

Baekho - Sigh. Instead of improving, he's another one who is getting worse and worse in his moronic behavior. I'm sure some of you saw the entertainment show last week or so, where they featured the Danpung actress. She complained about the Baekho actor that in a scene where he fell on top of her, his saliva kept dripping on her face and she told him to stop it! Yeow! Well, I wish she had never told that little story, because I cannot get it out of my mind. Every time I see Baekho's wet lips, and both Mansu and Granny wiping off his drunken kisses Friday night, all I can think about is Dan's comments in her interview. Uck.

Seonjae - The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree... even if he does look sweet and innocent. He's beginning to look like a clone of his mother, except he doesn't run off at the mouth all the time. Two things really annoy me about that guy. First, that he continues to be ashamed of Jiyeon. There is no denying that. (Why he gives her a ring and continues on with her is beyond me.) Second, if he's interested in milking Bonjour foods for his financial/professional gain, then he needs to marry into that family. He and Sua and Granny will make a perfect triad.

Gyeonghun (the male co-worker in Dan's office) is playing his usual role. I rate his character as standing out within the office. I am also impressed with how much weight this actor has lost and that he has fixed his balding pate. I hope this will help get him more roles of a varying nature. So far he's been typecast as the co-worker type we see here in Likable.

The Vet family - Basically I like all of them. The one "bad apple," Miae the Drama Queen, doesn't irritate me very much for some reason. Maybe because she is focused on a career goal and not just on being a spoiled brat whose only goal is to get whatever she feels like having at the moment, like Sua.

I also like the Sonya side story. Dalhyeon's character is the predictable neer-do-well, but at least I don't find the Sonya-Dalhyeon-Chan story annoying.

Hyeonu - The plastic surgeon. I'm sure this actor is as talented as most, but I think he was miscast in this particular role. Of course, the Baekho actor must outshine the plastic surgeon character in attractiveness. Baekho is supposed to be one of the main hunks in this drama, after all. Whom to cast? Tough job, since a baboon would be more attractive to me than either one of these guys. emoticon

This drama has a wonderful cast of outstanding support actors. I can only surmise it is the script, itself, that is a dud. No matter how great the acting may be, this sort of drama goes nowhere without a good script.

K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)

Like all beginning K-dramas, it is a little difficult to get into it as you sort out the characters and families. I never expected to get so addicted to Pure 19 when I first started watching it. Biazzare Bunch and Chill Sisters also grew on me. On the other hand, "Sky/Earth" started out fine and had good actors, but it never rose to its potential. So I am going to patiently wait for "Likeable it or Not" to become interesting. It hope it doesn't go the way of "Sky/Earth"

I adore Dongji as an actress, but her long suffering act in this drama could pall after a while. I hope she gets a backbone. Baekho is annoying, but interesting. All the young female actresses are very attractive, but Sua stands out...heck, she's got to be the tallest Korean actress I've seen so far. I am shocked at some of her dress and her exposing those long legs in shorts for her father's wedding was baffling. In Pure 19, everyone was so covered up to be almost ridiculous. But shorts to a wedding?? Korean weddings are strange to me. Some people dress up (I love the traditional dress) and some people go in office clothes...or shorts.

It is obvious that Sua is going to be the character we all love to hate. She is playing it well so far. Soenyaie is no Yunhu, but he has potential to be interesting. The Maei side story could be fun to watch.

So I'll give this one a thumbs up .....for now!

K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)

I agree that these latest daily dramas aren't up to par with Bizarre Bunch or PIH, even a tad close. This new one though, I like better than Sky and Earth.

In that one, there were too many babyish characters, from Bubs to Gram and even LB in my opinion that drove me crazy. And if Jisu was the touchy feely type, she'd be out of luck with moody LB. They all frustrated me to no end.

Here, there are no hunky guys, nothing to catch your eye. There is no one to root for, yet. Dongji, who I like, shouldn't even be living in that house after her marriage at her age. Is she a glutten for punishment?

Here she was an independent woman with her own business who upon marriage, sells her business and moves into another woman's house who she knows doesn't like her.
All of her independence and self worth is snatched away by this old woman. There is no respect when her son comes to visit. She's gone downhill in her life. Is it worth it? I don't think so.

Gram is quite capable of taking care of herself as we can see so there is no need that I see for her married son to live there after marriage. All the turmoil, and for what?

Gyeonghun who will always be Cedar Park to me, is in this show wasting his talents. This has got to be the worst roll for him, all they let him do is stand there in the office saying a few lines each time he's on. I'm surprised he would accept this.
I mean, he's not a new actor so what the heck are they doing to him? He knows how to act, why can't they give him a real side character to play? I'll never understand it.

I like the vet girl best like I said before. The plastic surgeon may be older than he looks and quite possibly could be a 30 year old in real life. His character doesn't bother me at all because he seems to have it all together and his life in order.

I haven't seen the parts where Seonjae begins to be interested in Bonjour Foods yet. I really thought he would reject Sua since he gave a ring to vet girl but he might be the one we end up hating.

Baekho, I don't know what to make of him. He seems to be the young lead guy in this, over Seonjae, and I can tolerate him much more than I did LB in Sky and Earth. He is more real, though silly.
He at least "touches" Danpung in different scenes, like when he was drunk, he was hanging all over her. Anything is better than nothing and LB (Sky and Earth) gave nothing.

I have a feeling Baekho might be the one who has the common sense in this show. I think he will grow up and I'll end up liking him. Maybe he will look out for and "save" his mother. I think he will end up being a really good person, I hope anyway.

I think it's wrong that Dongji at her age now, has to live her life to satisfy her mother-in-law who is not worthy of anything. And for Dongji to sign that paper for her is unthinkable as starters.

Mansu is nice but if he doesn't stand up for and protect his wife from his mother, well then, I have no use for him. He may as well be 15 years old with his life still controlled by mom.

I don't think all households are like this, it's just that some of these mother-in-laws are nasty, controlling women and their elder status goes to their head. And they seem to be the ones that have the daughters-in-law live with them.
I can never understand those husbands.

Seonjae's father in taking the money envelope that was hidden under the closet - I find this act really mean, did he really see something funny in tormenting his wife like that in the name of "teaching her a lesson," because he kept it going on when he saw what her "secret lost money" was doing to her.
He had a hugh smile on his face everytime he saw her torment and worry. I didn't find any humor in that at all. The woman can't even make a move without his input but I like her determination anyway.

I'm having some interest in this show and am thinking it might get better, at least I hope so. There's more action here than the last show but I think I'm going to get bored with the Dongji/mother-in-law storyline eventually since Mansu will probably turn into a wimpy husband.

Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)

Good Morning Family emoticon

I'm kind of liking this one. Seems they've stolen the whole cast from the BB set. I like that! They've got Gram playing the mother in law from hell here. I agree, a middle aged woman, having to live with that witch and that terrible, rude girl, is a far cry from where Dongji's life should be right now. There's not enough "first love" in the world for her to put up with such shabby treatment.

One thing that strikes me is that in such a traditional family, how could they raise such a badly behaved and impolite girl. I'd think that she'd have at least the rudimentry social graces. Sua is really, really obnoxious and is able to get away with it. I get how she's Gram's pet, but I'd think, she'd want her to be seen as well-raised. I'd feel I did a bad job, if my granddaughter was so impolite to her elders. Never mind the culture, horrible is horrible!

Vet girl seems to be in this relationship by herself. Yes, the boyfriend is sort of forthcoming, but he seems to not be really commiting. He seems to be holding off on introducing her to his family, though he's met her's more than once. He still looks a little iffy to me. I know, its going to become clearer in the next few episodes and I'm not going to like him. The actress who plays his mother, sorry no name, is really so diverse. She plays a totally different role in "Daughter in Laws" and she's wonderful in that too. I've seen her in many things and she's always spot on. emoticon

I'll keep watching this one. Baekho is sure to be Mansu's son. Its going to be a hoot when Gram finds that out. Then it'll surely hit the fan. I'll bet that after the smoke clears, he's going to become her beloved "Grandson". I think this kid is going to prove himself. I see him as silly right now, but I think he's got the right instincts.

Later emoticon

K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)

Whether Baekho is Mansu's son or not doesn't interest me. The character is still one of the most unattractive characters I have seen since I have been watching Korean "Sit Coms." In addition, this actor's expressions are amateurish and over the top. I feel sorry for Dangpun that she plays opposite him.

The actress who plays Sua is less attractive than the female vet. She is tall, but way too skinny.
I agree with many of Nchristi's comments.

and unfortunately I have to say now that also Danpung is now irritating me because she is miss prissy and perfect.... I understand that she has just been appointed manager so she probably is pretty nervous about her performance, but still.... She is better than her greedy and sneaky brother (what a disappointment that one has turned out to be) but look at her parents. What a sad marriage and what terrible role models to look at when she comes home... my 9pm slot is supposed to be giving me a time to lose myself into other families'lifes, but if it is all irritation and frustration and suffering ( I foresee Sanjae dumping vet girl and the wrong values taking over the small screen for a while) I 'd rather NOT WATCH!! I have gone to bed irritated already for a couple of weeks and I think I have got enough!!

Re: K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)

I believe Seonjae is "working" this arrangement with Sua in stereotypical fund management/business style. He is no dummy. I do think that he is moved by Sua's seductive nature (much different from the innocent vet girl) but I don't see him considering her marriage material at all. Hopefully his schemes and plans won't backfire on him. Vet girl seems to be a very honest straightforward type of girl and if she ever finds out about his tactics, she may change her mind about marrying him not to mention the flack she is going to get from Seonjae's mother when they finally meet.
Dongil must be carrying quite a heavy piece of baggage from the past for her to accept the treatment she is receiving from not only her mother-in-law, step daughter but also her so-called friend. Although I do like the president of Donjour foods, the Vet would have been a better harmonious match for Dongel.
This drama has included so many stereotypes that I wouldn't be surprised that it has touched the nerve of all social classes. It certainly isn't a drama that I would want distributed to foreign countries that would take its content as indicative of Korean real-life culture.

K-Drama: 미우나 고우나 (Likable or Not)

There is another show which is just as terrible as this show, "Daughters-in-Law" with the exception that most of the actors in "L/N" are better looking and this story makes more sense.

As far as Korean stereotypes, there seems to be some truth in the characterizations. From what I have gathered from older Koreans in Los Angeles, the shows from Korea picture the men as sensitive, caring and kind, but in truth they are extremely chauvinistic and women are still second place citizens.

Is Seoul really that safe that a pretty young girl (it happened in other Korean soaps) like Sua can be drunk completely out of her mind and just be in the street without any problem at all?? I stopped watching "Here Comes Ajumma" so this and Daughters in Law are next in my list. The only one I really like is "Dae Jo Young"
