Re: K-Drama: 하늘만큼 땅만큼 (As Much As Heaven and Earth/High as the Sky, Wide as the Earth)
nchristi I can understand about the cultural standard of respect for elders. And for how grams can do what she does - though I still think she is selfish and self-centered - because it is the norm.
And, thinking more upon it, it is an interesting contrast to Eunju who has no respect for anyone - especially in her family. She always speaks 'forthrightly' with no tact.
Early on when she and Groomie visited his family at least she pretty much kept her mouth shut to everyone. But in her own home - she needs a few lessons in manners, etiquette, or whatever!

Re: K-Drama: 하늘만큼 땅만큼 (As Much As Heaven and Earth/High as the Sky, Wide as the Earth)
ex-bridey is one of the rudest female characters that I have encountered in these dramas to date. Did she act that way when she met the family for the first time before they were married? Aigoo!!!!! I agree she will probably worm her way back into Groomie's life but I, for one, will not like it!
Eunha seems to be a "likeable" girl (as an adult, she annoys me but I don't see anything about her that would turn her peers off) so I wonder if she sets up her own wall against the other people in her class and I wouldn't be surprised if her mother has fed her the overexaggerated belief that she is the most beautiful girl and that is why no one likes her. Ridiculous...mom doesnt want her to really grow up and not need her any more...so she hasn't done anything to foster friendships for her daughter.
I must have missed it, who is the man that LB is traveling with?

curly carrot, before LB went back to his family, he was working in Seoul, and one of his co-workers was the man he's now traveling with. In fact, that man is the reason LB ended up in jail. Someone started picking on the older man, and LB defended him, and was jailed because he got into a fight and wouldn't apologize/pay up to avoid jail time.
Hi, steveds. Welcome! I think this one is still playing in Korea. So, no telling how many episodes--just depends on the ratings there.

Re: K-Drama: 하늘만큼 땅만큼 (As Much As Heaven and Earth/High as the Sky, Wide as the Earth)
I'm not sure that I can bear to watch that sweet faced young girl descending into madness while be visited in her dreams by the demons of her past. It appears obvious that she has been the victim of some unrelenting and vicious bullying, the severity of which has only been hinted at. Did she merely get teased, have her clothes ruined, and lose a lock of her hair to a mean little girl, or was she set upon and held down by a group of female thugs, ridiculed, pummeled, and had her herself nearly scalped by the leader while the mob held her down and taunted her? Does anyone here actually believe that there is anything in the character that we've been introduced to thus far could have been deserving of any such horrible treatment or that she's over-reacting to a normal childhood and that she should just snap out of it? Just how deep are these wounds and is the justification behind anyone partaking either actively or passively in her victimization?
My guess is that mom did then very much the same as she's doing now. She removes her daughter from the situation, creates a cover story in order for Eunha be able to rationalize why she has been violated, sweeps the problem under the rug so as not to bring attention to the reason for the crime (probably some act of school yard retribution taken out by the other kids who have been filled with hatred by their own parents the her mother) and compounds things by refusing to get the girl much-needed help as it may again draw negative attention to her own self. Dad probably saw his little girl savaged by blood-thirsty wolves and was too weak to properly come to her aid, and after being brow-beaten into accepting his wife's one-sided handling of the situation, retreated into himself and his own room, completely emasculated and powerless to fight against his much stronger willed spouse.
Eunja may not be nearly as evil as she appears and may just be the caring sister that she began to reveal in last night's episode. Maybe she was the only one to have witnessed first-hand her little sister being so savaged. Maybe she went to mom with her story and was told to let things go and put on a brave face. Both girls spent their childhoods being lavished with expensive presents and being isolated from and against the harshness of the outside world, but it may have been the older sister who was able to apprize the harshness that existed in their own self-exile behind the ivy-covered walls and under the tutelage of their icy-hearted maternal figure. Maybe Eunja sees herself becoming that kind of a mother and the thought terrifies her enough to shun motherhood. Maybe she remembers the cruelty of the other children and couldn't wait to grow up and never have to be a part of their world again.
Being a former kid myself, and one whose occupation now allows me to be party to some of their dealings with those who are different, I’ve seen some of the worst that this type of bullying can produce. We don't need to look far or think hard to be able to recognize how severe the negative by-products can be. It's hard enough being a kid that enjoys the best of protective environments and suffers unfair peer abuse. Imagine coming home after a traumatic episode and having no adult to turn to for proper guidance or comfort.
I may be way off base here, but my intuition and experience tells me that I'm not. Seeing the bad guy reap the fruits of a foul harvest is retribution well served. Turning our backs on the victim and leaving them to fend for themselves is a crime in of it’s self.
In the words of the renowned philosopher Edmund Burke, “All that is needed for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
Somebody needs to do something!

Re: K-Drama: 하늘만큼 땅만큼 (As Much As Heaven and Earth/High as the Sky, Wide as the Earth)
Hi, whytedaises, welcome! Lots of new people dropping by.
Unlike some of you, I don't think Bridey is all that awful. For one thing, she's had to live with IceMom and wimpy father all her life. I think a lot of her attitude is rebellion against the coldness of her mother and the non-attention of her father. I think she does love Groomie, but she doesn't understand what to do with that love--just think about the main example she's seen from childhood.
And while I'm still hoping Jisu and LB end up together, I agree with robbo4--someone should have and still should help Eunha. I think korean society is changing somewhat as regards people who have problems like Eunha, but since the generations don't talk to one another and children, of whatever age, are supposed to do what they're told, it's not surprising that RM wants to keep it hidden as well as ignore it. Perhaps helping her sister will awaken compassion in Bridey's heart.
Well, I can see it now--Grams will blame M-ja's illness on LB, and LB will accept that it's all his fault. At least, it looks like TG and Prof are actually going to get married.
