K-Drama: 하늘만큼 땅만큼 (As Much As Heaven and Earth/High as the Sky, Wide as the Earth)
jessikat and viyra, I agree with both of you. M-ja and Taesik have allowed the verbal abuse and sometimes physical abuse to continue. M-ja gets upset and speaks her mind somewhat to Grams and Bubs afterwards but then just lets it go, Grams always gets the last nasty word in about LB.
I have no doubt that M-ja and Taesik love LB, but they (especially Taesik) need to put a stop to it pronto. They really fail their son.
That's why I was glad when LB left. It's a lose-lose situation in that house.
I was surprised in one episode after LB leaves, when TG says to Jisu (I think it was her) that she doesn't feel so bad in her heart about LB (or something like that.)
Bubs and Grams are doing a good job being a pair of self centered, mean, nasty babies. I can't stand watching their scenes.
In episode 45 when MGrams met Groomie, I found it interesting when Groomie told her that LB left, MGrams said at least two times during their conversation, that he would be back. She seemed sure of herself and showed no worry over him when she said that.
The only reason it stood out to me was because MGrams is a caring person. She didn't seem worried about LB, and right away I thought there is a reason.
It made me think of the possibility that LB is the real son of a secret daughter of hers. MGrams has lots of secrets.
The woman who left him with M-ja could actually be M-ja's sister or half sister and no one in the family knew it. That would make LB the bio grandson to MGrams. She might have a plan all ready for LB to help him someday.
Anyway, I hope that comes true.

class blockquote class blockquote Interesting scenario, Jasy, considering Kdramas, it is highly possible.

I hit the wrong button, anyway, as I was saying, they showed Eunha crying in bed, and Eunju asked her if she was having a bad dream. Eunha later tells her that "the kids are bothering me." Eunju is later seen telling her mother "how about having Eunha see a psychologist?"
Also they showed the dr. telling M-ja and Taesik that "there is a lump in her brain," speaking about TG I think.
Did anyone see those scenes? I guess I'll see it tonight.
Nsheldon, how was the get together yesterday? I'll bet you all had a great time!

Re: K-Drama: 하늘만큼 땅만큼 (As Much As Heaven and Earth/High as the Sky, Wide as the Earth)
Yes, it would be great if LB were somehow related to M-Grams. His bio-parents have to have some mysterious backstory connected to the Kim family or M-Grams, it seems.
I think the reason M-Grams isn't worried about LB at present is because he isn't an inexperienced little boy. He's a man now, has served his two years in the military (which is many times harsher and more cruel than US military from many accounts I've read). So what is there to worry about? He can take care of himself physically and he left a message that he's coming back home to M-Ja and Taesik when he's got his head and life sorted out. Even M-Ja realizes and accepts this. She misses him and feels sorry for him being treated so horribly all his life by the family, but she knows he had to go and that he will be just fine until he comes back.
On M-Ja and Taesik allowing LB to be psychologically abused, I'm beating a dead horse here but, again, it is cultural. Traditionally, children (of any age) are not permitted to talk back to their elders. They are not even allowed to look them directly in the eyes, especially during unpleasant, confrontational conversations. Even adult children like M-Ja and Taesik are to reply with only "Yes" or "I'm sorry" when an elder like Grams pulls rank.
How many times have we heard a character like Grams yelling something about "glaring" at them, or about "talking back" when the person is only trying to explain their side? Telling your side is not permitted unless the elder asks you to. This is also why younger people when drinking will always turn their head away to the side as they down their drink. Even TG does this when in Prof's presence because he is older than she.
This is also why Koreans will ask your age first ... unless it is obvious who is older ... because the way they address you and act towards you depends on whether you are older or younger than they. If you are the younger person, it also dictates that you must speak and act appropriately as to an older person, your senior. (LB is expected to listen to and obey Groomie as his senior—that's why Groomie is always so irritated with LB.)
So, for M-Ja and Taesik to tell Grams where to get off, or to stop her behavior towards LB for the last 20 years just isn't going to happen—and it is not weakness or wrong behavior by M-Ja and Taesik. The American standard of putting the individual first is reprehensible behavior in Asian cultures. In fact, traditionally it is criticized and looked down upon as the ultimate selfishness and destroyer of orderly society.
As Americans we don't accept this because we've been raised as individuals, not in hierarchical family groups. But to understand the Koreans, we have to realize that their sense of right and wrong is just as strong about the superiority of their way as we may feel about ours. Their way works within their culture—it has for thousands of years. The American way has existed for only 300 years.
However, we're seeing an exaggerated drama that enflames our passions. It is designed to do that. But it probably enflames some of our moral sensibilities more than theirs because we live by a different set of rules.
Okay, enough already....

Eunha obsessing on LB to the point of slipping out of reality back into her school days... Here we go back into Psycho Girl.
TG with a lump in her brain? That would be interesting. I would think it is M-Ja with a brain tumor. She's the one who has been having the headaches for a long time now.
Man, poor LB is in for some industrial strength guilt! Stressing out his mother till she has a brain tumor and sending Eunha into psycho-land by his disappearance.

nchristi, "So for M-Ja and Taesik to tell Groomie, where to get off..." ha ha ha!
You're right nchristi. It's cultural and I get so absorbed into the story that I forget that. But boy, is it frustrating!
I have no idea who is supposed to have the brain tumor but I guess I'll find out tonight.
And I had no idea that Eunha might be slipping out of reality (with that "kids" statement.) Sounds like you could be right though.
Can't wait to see those scenes tonight, I hope they're not deleted.
Coming attractions don't always mean we'll see them all.

Coming attractions don't always mean we'll see them all. Well, I don't know (yet) that she's slipping out of reality, but it is clear that she can't handle her obsession with LB in an average, healthy way. Then to hear she's having nightmares or whatever with kids chasing her is a throwback to her school days when she couldn't fit in to school to the point of girls cutting her hair off!
Actually, for Eunju to suggest they seek mental health care for Eunha is a HUGE statement in Korean culture. Psychiatric and psychological problems are things to be hidden, a "weakness" to be swept under the rug and never spoken of—let alone get professional help. Thank goodness some of these K-dramas are beginning to address this matter.
On the previews, if they edit out things you saw just say so. If we've seen it here, I'll write it up for you. It's just that I can't always remember who needs what, so please post your request or questions. I've also noticed that things in previews have been cut from the SoCal version at times, too.
