Re: K-Drama: 하늘만큼 땅만큼 (As Much As Heaven and Earth/High as the Sky, Wide as the Earth)
class p Episode 16 (Thursday) - Deleted Scenes
Grams and M-Grams in bedroom... class ul Grams is dressed ready to go out. M-grams is cleaning the floor. Grams tries to get her to come along to the senior center, but M-Grams declines, that she doesn't feel up to it.
As soon as Grams leaves, M-gram rushes to the restaurant to be with M-ja (Myeong-ja...her bio-daughter). She looks around to see if anybody else is there. They are alone, M-grams takes off her coat and starts working in the kitchen, looking and smiling at M-ja. (This is why Grams is so disgusted when she comes back from the senior center to the restaurant. She is correct that M-grams sneakily remained behind to be alone with M-ja.) class center *****At a construction job... class ul LB and his father are doing a wallpaper job. Working, talking, laughing...TG at work with Jisu and the other girl...
class ul The other girl teases TG about something, Jisu looks down and laughs to herself. TG gets a phone call from Bridey regarding work. TG jumps onto the other girl's case regarding whatever it is. The girl resists TG a little, Jisu must be siding with TG as she says something to the girl causing the girl to drop her head and dejectedly say "all right." (Maybe she has to do something she doesn't want to do, or perhaps the girl didn't do her job properly in having the theater owner show the previews enough times, so Jisu took over and id it herself?) class center *****Oh, please... give us a break...
The characters I can definitely do without are Eunha, The Uber-Annoying Princess; her sister Bridey; and Jisu's money-hungry, idiotic acting brother.

Re: K-Drama: 하늘만큼 땅만큼 (As Much As Heaven and Earth/High as the Sky, Wide as the Earth)
class p Episode 17 (Friday) - Deleted Scenes
Here is a block of screen caps from this episode. (Click to enlarge.)
Grams and M-Grams in bedroom... class ul Bubs comes home with the bag of chestnuts Grams requested. They sit close to each other, Bubs peels some for Grams and feeds her, both ignoring M-Grams, who is looking very left out. (She IS rudely being left out.) Finally, Grams feels guilty and hands one to M-Grams, who declines, gets up and walks out of the room. Grams seems a little happy about it, but gets on Bubs' case because he doesn't care about her.
In the front room M-grams is sitting alone when Tango Girl comes home. TG greets M-Grams then goes into her room where Bubs and Grams are giggling and laughing—Bubs is still hand-feeding his mother. Suddenly M-Grams comes into the bedroom with a tray of food she puts down and serves to Grams and Bubs. Bubs feels so guilty that he practically runs out of the room. He runs to TG seeking refuge from her. She's calm, as usual. class center *****Taesik comes into the restaurant at the end of the day. class ul M-ja is finishing cleaning up the tables and is in pain in her shoulders. Her husband is sweet to her, talks a little bit, then tells her he's going out to buy her some patches for her back. He leaves. M-ja smiles, appreciating his thoughtfulness. class center *****Groomie and Bridey arrive home happy after their agreement in the bar... class ul After greetings with RichMom, they go to their bedroom. Groomie is very happy... all smiles. Looks as though they both try convincing the other of their position, but they don't argue, they state their positions with a smile on their faces. class center *****Prof comes home... class ul Greeted by Jisu. She takes something to his room and notices their family photo (parents, two children) on his dresser. Jisu takes it to her room and talks to her mother's photo. After washing up, Prof returns to his room, notices the framed photo is missing. class center *****

Re: K-Drama: 하늘만큼 땅만큼 (As Much As Heaven and Earth/High as the Sky, Wide as the Earth)
I think, I finally figured out why Eunja is like that. That’s because of her mother! I think, her parent’s relationship is also to blame why she is so selfish. Her parents make her less interested in family dynamic I guess. But of course that’s not an excuse to avoid the in laws; there she has a superiority problem.
Once I thought how she and Groom got together….may be because opposite attracts? But then again, while they were dating they didn’t talk…so how on earth they knew they were opposite in terms of personality? LOL.
But then again, I guess they are not so opposite…both have a striking similarity which is “being selfish”. And also besides being selfish I think, there is another similarity with those two and that is-both have complicated family.
I really like the RBF!! I wish he and Jisu could get together! I think, he truly loves her….but she doesn’t seem to love him as much.
After watching these past couple of dramas, it looks like in Korea it’s trouble if you don’t have a father or a mother, huh?
I was ROTFLMAO with Nchristi’s “Look of Love” picture! Yap, that’s a look of love with frowning eyebrows!

Re: K-Drama: 하늘만큼 땅만큼 (As Much As Heaven and Earth/High as the Sky, Wide as the Earth)
the attitudes expressed about LB's situation made me sad. I hope this was just a drama line and not the attitude of the general culture. adoption seems to come up frequently in the Kdramas and instead of it being looked at as a gift to all parties involved, it is either hidden or looked down upon. the Asian cultures appear to be very focused on hard work and sacrifice so why is so much emphasis placed on family "Conditions" when hard work, determination and sacrifice can elevate someone just as well, if not better (in the overall picture) than family standing.

"Family standing" is the ultimate cultural value in Korea. There, family is blood line—blood line through the sons. Hard work will elevate "someone," but it is with the purpose of improving the Family—not the individual. As one is "elevated," he/she also are obligated (willingly) to bring along the entire family. That's why Groomie gives "allowance" to his family members, though he lives elsewhere. (This is also why having children is his highest priority. He is the only Kim family member who can continue the blood line. If he doesn't have a son, we're not talking about him just feeling sad that he doesn't have children. He will be a failure as the #1 son (in fact, only son) in his family and it will be his fault if the generations end with him. If it were real life, he'd probably divorce Eunju on that basis and have children with a different woman.)
Everywhere there are people with all sorts of circumstances. But to enter and improve one's standing in "proper" society in Korea, you must have good parents, good blood lines, good future prospects: the right Conditions. Being an orphan (worse is a half-breed orphan) makes one an outcast in that society.
This issue is just now being focused upon in Korea, mostly by celebrities who are half-Korean themselves. For decades, full-Korean orphans were adopted to parents in other countries because native Koreans wouldn't accept them. Now people there are becoming sensitive toward having abandoned these children. (Ethnic Koreans raised in other countries report it nearly impossible to be accepted back into Korean society if they return—they are not "Korean" enough.)
It was only last year that the government made it possible for half-Koreans to be employed by the government. If you were born in Korea (eg., an American GI fathers a child with a Korean wife), that child, though never setting foot outside Korea, could not be hired by the Korean government. Last year they finally opened up an area within the Police Dept: Non-full Koreans can now be hired as police officers, but assigned only within non-Korean sections of town.
So, no, this isn't just a drama line portrayed in these shows. In fact, the real day-to-day situation is considerably worse than what we see in K-drama.
Seoul may be a huge metropolitan city and seems more "Americanized" than a lot of other Asian cities, but it is not a cosmopolitan city. Korea is still a very homogeneous society (look the same, speak same language, share same culture/values), with a long way to go to treat people strictly on an individual basis, rather than as a family unit.
And maybe they never will. American individuality is a cultural value on which our country was based because people left their homogeneous cultures behind and wanted to live their own lives, thus the "melting pot" that is the U.S. This is not the case for most other countries in this world.

Re: K-Drama: 하늘만큼 땅만큼 (As Much As Heaven and Earth/High as the Sky, Wide as the Earth)
I am just about caught up with all the eps ,I think I have one left ( Last Fridays ) .
I don't recommend doing it this way ,it is confusing - but it is better than missing all this back story .
I think that the new marriage is doomed - but it will be interesting to see if they can pull this off .I think either of the pair would be entitled to a divorce simply becaus they want such totally different things in life .
I find it ironic that the new bride accuses her husband's family of needing so much - while hers makes no demands .That is a funny statement to back up , as she is living with her parents .Maybe they make no demands on her ...but ????
My favorite couple is MyeonJu and the Professor . I think she should go down swinging !! She will provide us with a lot of entertainment.
I find it distressing as well to hear some of the statements about adoption .As Muyoung ( Lost Boy ) said to his brother " we are strangers " and his brother replied " do the 20 years we lived together mean nothing ?"
It is also ironic to find that his oma ,MyeonJa was raised by "another "mother .
I am sensitive to this issue because we have members in our family that are adopted and some have different last names . There is no difference .
I know this is early in the show ,but I wish JiSu and Lost boy would end up together .......
I would like to add to Nchristi's notes on Korean society . When I was in Japan and Korea ,I found out a lot of things .For example ,the birthrate in Japan is 1.25 ,and it is less in Korea . Korea has always been considered to be a very homogenous society ,but that is about to change .Helen told me that 10 % of all Korean marriages are now to NON Koreans ,and after I returned to LA ,I saw an article that put that number at 13% ...there are many reasons for this ,and I guess it depends on who you talk to ....
It is said that men in the countryside and rural areas have a very hard time finding brides ,and have started to look to other Asian countries for other possibilities . Helen says that Korean women have careers ,don't have to marry ,and sometimes choose not to .
There is also a feminist movement of sorts ,fighting the Confusionist teachings of male superiority in that country .
Personally ,I think it is a good thing if famous half- Koreans like Daniel Henney and Dennis Oh make it easier and more acceptable for others in their same situation ......

Re: K-Drama: 하늘만큼 땅만큼 (As Much As Heaven and Earth/High as the Sky, Wide as the Earth)
Groomie also has to deal with the strange situation he finds himself him. I'm really surprised that he agreed to live with his in-laws, but I guess it was because there was no room at the place where his parents live. The bride gives up her family when she marries, so if Groomie and Nasty Face were living with his parents, she would be having a terrible time and learning a lot. The DIL has very few rights, especially in a family with both the MIL and grandmother in law still living and the aunt as well. In the traditional family, she couldn't even visit her family unless MIL gave her permission. Her traditional job is to be submissive to her MIL, feed everyone, do the housecleaning, and produce an heir ASAP.
Groomie comes from a family where his dad took in BioMom with hardly any questions. Traditional to the max. I can't see Rich Mom doing that.
Groomie may say that LB is his brother, but he doesn't really believe it in his heart (surprising, given the way his mother loves LB). That's why he didn't tell Nasty Face and her family about LB. Besides, LB isn't on the family register--that's what they mean when they say his name wasn't changed.

I'm sure it was said earlier in the series, but I don't recall...when was LB brought into the family? (age) and what is the age difference between the two brothers?
