Re: K-drama: 진짜 진짜 좋아해 (Really Really Like You)

Part 1...I'm still in the process of finishing this up and I will be posting SPOILERS (in spoilers of course) to make my POINT because what we know about BG is very little now until you reach a certain episode, which clearly hasn't aired here yet: class blockquote teal4two wrote:
BongGi gets BongSoon and he is certainly undergoing quite the transformation into a mature responsible adult from the mouthy, profligate, looked down on by coworkers goof-off that he started the show as.
I don't think it's a transformation, since the real him--that side of him exhibited by his concern for Bong-soon, as well as Hyo-won, has always been hidden under this cover of the "the mouthy, profligate, looked down on by coworkers goof-off" we've witnessed from the beginning episodes. A better word for what is happening to Bong-gi is the unmasking of the disguise he's kept up for goodness knows how long. He has close to perfecting his technique, but even from the first episode, he has made slips revealing his inner self:

[1] There was Mr. Nam, standing on the side of a dirt road in the Presidential residence after exchanging comments with the Chef Ahjumma. He sees a procession of black sedans heading his way. He knows the occupants of the cars and proceeds to lower his head, bowing. Then ever so slightly he glances up, identifies Director Lee in one of the vehicles, and immediately puts his head down again, knowing who would be passing by next--his son.

Indeed, as his head lowered once again, Bong-gi, in the passenger seat of one of the vehicles spots his dad. He quickly raises his arm and looks the other way, but as the car passes by, Bong-gi watches with a pained expression, the receding figure of his father, whose head is still lowered, from the passenger side-view mirror.

[the above was from a scene cut/edit out from the SoCal aired episode 1]

[2] On the train heading toward Chulsan or Kang-won-do where he was to escort, or rather, bring the Dr. back, Bong-gi, smiling, is in the process of taking out the Jeju Island vacation tickets when his Presidential Guard ID falls/flies out of his pocket. He quickly reaches out into aisle and snaps it up, fear written all over his face at the thought of losing it.

[the above was from a scene cut/edit out from the SoCal aired episode 2]

From episode 1, it seems as if Bong-gi doesn't take his job seriously when he hit on the girl who didn't have an invitation to see the Police Acadamy graduation, but yet in the scene above, what the ID card represents suggests that being a Presidential Guard means much more than something he can use to hit on girls with. And it's much more than being embarrassed in episode 4 when he reports his ID card missing and the entire Presidential staff calling the one to lose the card an idiot. As we will learn, class reveal Image class spoiler Bong-gi, went against his father's wishes, and chose to become a Presidential Guard, because of his mom. His mom's death prompted his decision to become a bodyguard. He lost his mom when he was 18, ten years since then, and he's still haunted by the events of her death. By being a Presidential Guard, he's tormenting himself, forever reminded what he didn't do that fateful night, and as a guard, it's what is required of him, that he can't run away from.

And he originally took out his anger on Bong-soon...why? Bong-soon was a representation of Bong-gi's failure to his mom. And she was someone he didn't fully know well. class reveal Image class spoiler We will learn that there are 3 times of the year when he will go crazy--his mom's birthday, her memorial day, and his birthday. His first encounter with Bong-soon happened 4 days before his mom's memorial. Two days before his mom's memorial, Bong-soon hides his ID card, her intention to get in him trouble. The day before his mom's memorial he finds his ID missing and comes rushing back to get it. He had vowed he wouldn't return there, but he did it anyways for the ID card--for what it represents. That moment, as he was lying on the ground of her home, exhausted after not being able to find it, Bong-gi was completely defeated in mind. He had let his mom down.

Image

[3] The night of Bong-gi's mom's memorial, his dad is waiting for him to come along and visit his mom, but Bong-gi accepts to a Kum-do match with Director Lee. During the match, Bong-gi pleads with the Director to stop. He has to go, it's his mom's memorial day. He has been avoiding it the entire day even when his dad was hinting to him at the barbershop. Director Lee asks for his reason for not seeing his mom and Bong-gi replies "Because I've done something wrong to her." When the Director presses on, Bong-gi doesn't reply.

[the above was from a scene cut/edit out from the SoCal aired episode 4]

Interesting how the little we should have known/understood with regards to Bong-gi gets conveniently cut out from the SoCal aired version...

Just like Joon-won who made it appear he had a semblance of control over his life, making up to what he felt deficient as the President's son, so does Bong-gi made it appear that nothing in the world could bother him, when deep down he sees himself as his mom's murderer class reveal Image class spoiler for the past ten years. He hasn't gotten over that.

Wow, excellent points creidesca. Darn me, I had to go read the spoilers, but you make a very good argument. I wonder why they decided to cut those important scenes from the SoCal version when they seem so important to the development of Bong Gi's character.

hi everyone,

thanks everyone for sharing their thoughts. I can see that we all have a different perspective of the characters, and I'm glad to see everyone shared their thoughts.

I went back and read the previous postings, someone suggested that I called up the cable company for my k-dramas fix. I did thought briefly of it but thought it was too much of a hassle...hehe. Plus the people that I was vacationing w/ would have to declare me being crazy... emoticon.

my thoughts on the Dr: at first, I like him b/c he helped BS transitioning from the country side to the city and providing a lot of supports. However, I stopped liking him when he started to cont. seeing BS while saying "she's just like a sister to me" and beginning to see more of BS than his sick wife. I can kinda sympathize him but I don't know...hehe. But definitely it wouldn't be a drama w/o any of these complications emoticon.

thanks creidesca for your info and point of views. it was great. i read a bit of the spoiler but it's not so bad...hehe. I'm excited to see when those reveal.

one question - I kinda skipped here and there w/this drama while I was on vacation. why did that chef girl (the smirky one) hates BS so much?

funniegirlie the head chef and that girl chef hate BS because she was hired as a fellow/equal chef when she had just been a kitchen help before. The main chef (ya know the really nice adorable one that knew BS when she was a baby) took her in without telling anyone what he was doing because he saw the potential in her, but the other two "main" chefs dont see that. They only see that she came from nothing, she knows nothing, and she is screwing everything up. So, basically they are jealous.

Hope that helped.

K-drama: 진짜 진짜 좋아해 (Really Really Like You)

After witnessing the events in tonight's episode, it doesn't look like Bong-gi stands a chance.

The first person Bong-soon wanted to call was Joon-won. Then she goes to her and Joon-won's special place...and makes that one call that Joon-won can see. Joon-won, on the other hand, admits to the First Lady that he likes Bong-soon. No past tense anywhere in that conversation of his. So what is he going to do about his wife then?
The First Lady is clearly affected by the knowledge that there is something going on between Bong-soon and her son--she's having trouble eating lately.
And it looks like Soo-kyung has fallen for Bong-gi...her reaction to him coming to the club, the red string tying the two of them, the jealousy...and he's going to tutor her, just like what Joon-won had initially done for Bong-soon. This should be interesting as he did say he did pretty well in school. Of course never would have expected this of Bong-gi, with that mouth of his. He's displaying traits uncharacteristic of those from the beginning episodes. Who would have thought he knew French? And his understanding of the teenage mind?
And I know Bong-soon means well, but shouldn't she concentrate on her own problems, which she still hasn't gotten a handle on, instead of fixing Bong-gi up with Mal-sook? Does she not recall what Bong-gi said way back in episode 16 or so when he said that the nutrionist definitely wasn't his girlfriend? How many more times will we have to witness these types of conversations between the two where one means one thing and the other is thinking on a completely different level?
To have Mal-sook tell him that one of the reasons he's not right for her was because of the tie Bong-soon picked out for him....as if he didn't know it was tacky--he wore it because Bong-soon had personally chosen it for him, saying it was pretty.
I couldn't help thinking of this when Mal-sook told him she only falls for the Daniel Henney type:

Image

when Minki had trouble getting through his acceptance speech at the MBC 2005 Drama Awards, New Actor Award. He was so happy he couldn't speak and Daniel gave him a pat on the back to loosen him up.

Oh, either Bong-gi has thick skin, or he intentionally said all the wrong things about the x-ray to draw Joon-won into a conversation, because if it was me and I went on a speal like that and someone pointed just how wrong I was, I'd be blushing all over. Bong-gi didn't even look embarrassed!
Not only does he talk to Bong-hee, he even speaks to the Dom Perignon like it was a human being.

It was interesting as to the choice of fairytale Hyo-won read to her mom (the scene where Ji-soo would wet the bed). The story: The Snow Queen, from Hans Christian Anderson.

In this scene, Hyo-won took on the role of Gerda and w/ her kiss/tears restored Kay's (Ji-soo's) memory, which had been relieved by the Snow Queen.
In context with RRLY, Joon-won can be Gerda while Ji-soo Kay since it's Ji-soo whose memory is in question. We've witnessed the trials ("journey") Joon-won has gone through in attempting to restore his wife to him (was it not his "tears" at the end of EP 22 that miraculously brought forth some improvement to Ji-soo?). However, Joon-won does not seem to carry the strength and patience that is conveyed by Gerda...maybe Bong-soon is like the woman with the flower garden in The Snow Queen who makes Gerda forget what her purpose is all about. Joon-woon has a long way to go if that's the case since the woman with the flower garden is just the first leg of Gerda's journey.

for those who are not familiar w/ the story of The Snow Queen, you can read up on it here: http://hca.gilead.org.il/snow_que.html

When his mother-in-law offered to take the soaked sheets, Joon-won should have accepted...as suggested in Bong-gi's voiceover at the end of episode 25 to Bong-soon:
"that's right, village chicken, get up.
if you're tired, you should just shout and let others help you.
and if you fall, you should stand up strongly.
yeo bong soon ah, fighting!"

Joon-won has always had those who cared for him around him, supporting him, but his pride completely blinded him to accepting what they had to offer. And if Joon-won truly wished Bong-soon to get over him, he should start by looking less tired, worn out, sad so it's not written all over his face. It's because Bong-soon can tell by looking at him that she still clings to him.

and some memorable scenes from this episode, translations courtesy of n5y17cgirl and damifino at the soompi thread:

BK: A 1998 Don Perignon. But aren’t you a little too expensive for a wine? Hey, Bong-i (the duck) what do you think?... What’s that? What is that thing sparkling in my eyes? It’s my tears. I bought this expensive wine to congratulate your unni (Bongsoon) which left me teary-eyed (b/c it was expensive). But what’s taking her so long to get home?

phone rings…

SG: Ahjushi, I’m at [some] club. But there’s some weird guy here – (faking a damsel in distress) "ahjushi, why are you doing this? I’m so scared. (to BK) Hurry up and come, ‘k?"
BK: Hey, Soo-gyung, Soo-gyung! Aish… what, club?

BS goes to the park and listens to her old voicemail – remember that msg JW left her that night she didn’t pick up? to tell her about the wine? Anyway, she pretends to have a live conversation with him… JW sees/hears her from behind the trees, and stares at her with those God-forsaken eyes…

At the club…

BK grabs the guy dancing with SG from behind, twists his arm and pushes him up against the wall.
BK: What do you think you’re doing? And with a high school senior, nonetheless. Do I need to teach you a lesson?
MS: What? High school senior? Aren’t you 20?
SG: You should go easy on him. He is, after all, a friend.
BK: what, a friend?!

BK: What are you doing here?
MS: Me? What’s really going on b/t the two of you?
BK: That guy you called me about, that was him?
SG: (to herself, in disbelief) He really came. (to BK, in a tone of voice like "you stupid moron") So you come just b/c I tell you to come? Well, it's been fun, ahjushis. starts to walk away...

SG: ow, that hurts!
BK: of course it hurts. Do you think I’m slapping you to tickle you? And what’s with these clothes? If that’s what you call them…You’ve got nothing to look at, and yet you dress as if the less clothes you have on, the sexier you look. But it’s not… A long skirt with your ankle peaking through? Now that’s sexy. From now on, you wear your sister’s clothes, o.k.?
SG: How incredibly embarrassing.
MS: Hey, I’m asking you: what’s the relationship b/t the two of you?
BK: It doesn’t matter. From now on, don’t meet SG. o.k.? if I catch the 2 of you together one more time… do it at your own risk. (Turns to SG) And you, this is your way of saying "let’s battle, huh. o.k. let’s see who wins, me or you."

Back at the house, BK drags SG in and tells her "from now on, come home before I do. Study at home. If you have questions, ask me."

BS, witnessing this scene, says to her sister "Have you given up on your life? If you have, do it quietly. You making trouble like this only proves to me that you’re immature and want attention from me."

BK (trying to break the ice): When’d you get home? Try to come home right after work... The ice is all melted. Seriously, you can’t seem to do anything right/there’s not one thing you’ve matched me on at the right time.
BS: Why’d you buy such an expensive wine?
BK: What do you mean why… to congratulate you.
BS: Don’t you have any sense/emotions? How can you buy that when you’re feeling like this?

SG storms inside, shoving BS & BK apart along the way. (I loved this part; SG was totally acting like a little kid throwing a temper tantrum b/c she wasn’t getting her way. Haha )

The following scene (in blue) was previously translated by damifino
BS: Why did you keep it inside? Wouldn't it have been better if you told me?
BK: What?! What?
BS: Idiot, Fool! How did you lose a woman right under your nose?
BK: BongSoon, did you finally find out?
BS: Yeah, I accidentally happened upon it. What are you going to do when she seems to like some other man? Just forget all about her. You're the one who said that things that can't happen, just can't.
BK: What? Forget all about it? Things that can't happen, just can't? *sigh* Why can't it happen? Why can't it happen for me? Aren't you being a bit harsh? Are you saying these things knowing what's even in my heart?
BS: I know, I told you I know. It's because I know what's in your heart that my heart is hurting. Why can't you control you heart and have some strength? Is there only one woman in this world? You can meet someone else! I'm already upset as it is, why do you have to make me upset too? Be brave, don't be so down.
BK: *frustrated* That's just fine, let's forget about it. Let's make a toast.

Image

BS: *looking at the clock* What's going on? Could they still be together at this hour? *picks up phone* What? Hey, Nam BongKi, hey!
BK: Yeah
BS: What the... you called, why aren't you talking?
BK: What are you doing up at this late hour?
BS: How about you? What are you doing calling when you should be home? Are you still with Malsook?
BK: No, I got dumped.
BS: What? Dumped? Malsook isn't the type to dump someone just like that, what did you do? Why didn't you try harder?
BK: *sigh* I'm sorry for getting dumped. She says she doesn't like me. She didn't like the flowers I brought, my playing with the food, but more importantly, she didn't like my tacky tie. She said she couldn't stand it.
BS: What?
BK: Why didn't you tell me ahead of time (about the blind date)? If I had known, I wouldn't have taken the flowers, played with my food, or worn this tacky tie.
BS: What's up with Malsook? What's wrong with the tie? In my eyes, it looked very distinguished.
BK: Yuh Bong Soon, country chicken (which translates into "hillbilly"), you chicken head, do you even call that thing attached to your neck a head?
BS: What?! Chicken head? You jerk, are you done?
BK: No, I'm not done. Chicken eyes, do you even call that thing eyes?
BS: What?! Now it's chicken eyes?! Where are you? Where the heck are you that you think you can speak to me like that?
BK: Now I realize why chicken breast meat are just so dry and gets caught in your throat. Just hang up. *hangs up*
BS: Hey, Nam BongKi! *frustrated, walks outdoors and sees BongKi*

BK (talking to himself here): 'Hurt caused by love needs to be healed with love.' Why can't YOU be that love for me...
BK turns around to find BS standing there, staring at him...

ahhhhhh! I missed so much since I was out of country -____- I'm so glad I'm back. I actually almost forgot it was on! I caught it right at the part when Mr.Chang tells his mom that he likes BS. urrrrghhhhh!!! What the heck?! He really needs to set his priorities straight. And poor BG...going to the date and buying flowers and everything [and even wearing that tie!] for BS, and then finding out she wanted to set him up with someone else emoticon how horrible..

I can't wait for tomorrow's episode..and I definitely won't miss it for anything!

I have a feeling that BG will find a way out of his accidental confession or perhaps BS will just miss it again like she has so many other times with his subtle hints about his feelings for her...but the ending of that episode was great!

And creidesca I agree with you. I was so frustrated that BS's first call was GOING to be to Dr. Chang, but then she remembered what happened...then the scene in the park...grrr!! Why can't they just let each other go? The Dr. does not help anything and after telling his mom!...

Can't wait for tonights episode!

Hi all!!

Just started watching this drama. A lot of posts to catch up on so won't make any comments except that it is quite interesting and am enjoying it very much.

I made a comment in the Mr. Goodbye thread that it is similar in that the main character is a trainee as a chef and the main character, in the other, is a trainee in a hotle - both with a lot of problems to work through.

Just one quick question - how did the wife/mother become ill? She is too young for them to be talking about Dementia - I thought that was just for old people.
