Re: MonCal 3po progress.... revisited
There's a video of these somewhere - the heads moving back and forth with voice clips - looked awesome Cal!

Re: MonCal 3po progress.... revisited
Thanks Chris.
When I took them for Anthony to look at he gave me a hard time... asking if I had the rights to use his voice .. I didn't think to ask if he had the rights to use his voice hehe

Re: MonCal 3po progress.... revisited
I've finally been working on this project again
All the molds are finally done. Fresh out of the molds:
I only have to make molds for 3 more parts and cast those up and we'll almost have everything. We will most likely be missing a few pistons here and there but we'll get those made up down the road.
For now we're using MLC arms until I can find a metal worker who can make arms for me the same way the originals were made, with lightweight metal tubes.
I am especially happy with how the hand came out. I had to do some research and took a small gamble on which rubber to use but it turned out great and we have a durable glove that should take paint and / or the plating process. From what I understand, this is how they made the gloves, shorts, and feet from Empire on, all through the rest of the movies:
This first suit that I'm building, being from the original, has a lot of bugs to work out so this is sort of a rough draft, test version. I'll cast up another one, doing this whole process again and then clean those up to yield a much better, cleaner, accurate suit!! I'm only missing the back of the head from the original so I'll probably have to sculpt that to go with the accurate face that I have. Since I've been making the vac-formed head for several years that shouldn't be too much of a problem.... unless of course one of the previous owners can find the back of the head for me
It's exciting to finally get this project going again after several years and not have the molds sitting all over the shop I hope to bring the "rough draft" suit to CV to put on display with our hoth set in the droid room.
We're in crunch time to get this suit done for an event so more pics to come
Enjoy

Re: MonCal 3po progress.... revisited
So great to see this coming together Cal! Will you be casting the feet in rubber too?

Re: MonCal 3po progress.... revisited
cool idea, but man those gloves would be really hot quickly and difficult to take off.
Not to mention that once you vacplate a flexible material the plating starts flaking off immediately.

Re: MonCal 3po progress.... revisited
Emails sent Cal. We tested Cosmic-Chrome on a pair of rubber, chemical gloves and they held up fine without any flaking.
