Performance Enhancers
OK Guys,
We talked about and tested the better engine performance resulted from changing the air filter and using the premium unleaded fuel, but has anyone considered changing their spark plugs to the NGK Iridium IX type?
I know that xtrails in Japan come with iridium spark plugs as standard, but we only got standard plugs in ours when it arrived to Australia? I wonder why?
Besides the longer life of the iridium spark plug it actually give the engine more power and better acceleration.
Have a look at the tests run on cars using this plug in the NGK Australia web site.
http://www.ngk.com.au
The NGK Iridium plug for the xtrail is:
Your Vehicle:
10/01 - on Nissan X-Trail 2.5L QR25
Spark Plug Part No. Plug Gap
Recommended Plug LFR5A-11 1.1
Iridium Option LFR5AIX-11 1.1
I would recommend that you change your plugs to the iridium ones when time comes to change your plugs and ask nissan to fit these for you and you can pay the difference.
Or you can buy them yourself and ask nissan to fit them for you during the service.
I'll be changing mine just to see if it really does make the difference to power and acceleration as claimed by NGK.
One question: Does changing the spark plug requires any special learning commands to be entered to the ECU or it doesn't have any affect on the ECU at all and I can do a straight swap?

Re: Performance Enhancers
Jalal,
I know the X-Trail is not a sports car, however after today’s experience with the Air Filter I’m very interested in performance discussions.
Most of your questions from your last post would be best answered from a reputable mechanic. The Iridium spark plug from NGK sounds great, but is it just a marketing ploy? Does it actually work as it claims? Only a mechanic could tell you this and perhaps some of Nissans service technicians would be best answering these questions.
Although I’d like to hear from other members on the forum for their opinion.
Rich and your supered up Pulsar, any comments?
Kind Regards

Re: Performance Enhancers
That is correct in terms of life expectancy of these type of plugs, however there are 2 type of iridium plugs:
* Platinum 0.8 mm dia.
(serive life 100,000 kms)
Long service life and even better ignitability due to a small diameter centre electrode
* Iridium 0.8 mm dia.
(service life 160,000 kms)
Extremely long service life. Same level of ignitability 0.8 mm dia. Platinum
* Iridium IX 0.6 mm dia.
(service life 60,000 kms)
Long service life. Same as 0.8 mm dia. of Platinum and extremely good ignitability characteristics. (Better than 0.8 mm dia. platinum or 0.8 mm dia. iridium)
The last one is the one with most power.
PS. I just realised that I un-intentionally used a funny title for this thread and we may get hits from some sports people, only to find-out we're taking about "plugs"

I fitted the NGK platinum to my 180sx they were about 25 bucks each. Unfortuneatly i made the change to these plugs along with a number of other changes so the difference in hp on the dyno sheet does not just reflect this change. My mechanic raved about how good they were and would not fit anything else, that was good enough for me.
I believe the platinum last for the life of the car where as iridium are more efficient but don't last as long as the platinum.

Re: Performance Enhancers
The cost of Iridium IX 0.6 mm dia.(part number LFR5AIX-11) (service life 60,000 kms) is $91 for a set of 4 plugs from SuperCheap Auto for those interested.

Re: Performance Enhancers
Shane,
I’d expect the exhaust would make some difference, such as adding extractors, etc?? Sorry I’m a real newbie to this sort of stuff, and just really impressed with the K&N Air Filter.
Although changing the exhaust system would probably cost a bit ?? Would they keep the existing mufflers and change the piping to a larger diameter? Or change the whole lot.
How much did it cost you on your Falcon?

Re: Performance Enhancers
Jalal,
Have you bought your NGK Iridium IX spark plugs yet? Went to Autobarn today and was quoted $22 each, therefore $88 for 4. Although they didn’t have them in stock.
So I tried Super Cheap. They had none in stock either. So I said depending on price, I might place an order. I was quoted $17.13, therefore $68.52 for all 4.
Bargain!! I placed the order, paid for it in full, and they are due for arrival this Wednesday.
I think the guy might have stuffed up, and this might be the cost price, as there is $0.00 GST on the tax invoice.
=D
