Prospective T31 owner intro.

HI, thinking of buying an X31 Ti however am basically wanting to know if it's possible to upgrae the steering wheel to include the audio and phone controls shown on the European model. I'm a little perplexed why they don't allow you to option these relatively standard features in. Also the Diesel would have been a nice option however perhaps that will come later...

Hi Doug and welcome ,

Your member number is X-693

Glad to have you as a formal member of our forum and a potential owner of an xtrail.

I have asked exactly the same question when I first test drove the T31 and was told that someone in head office didn't use their full brain when they decided to bring the T31 to Australia and didn't include the steering audio controls in it emoticon

If the old shape anything to judge this on, this modification is almost impossible, unless you change the entire steering wheel and get a head unit that has a remote control input for the steering connections to connect to.

I have tried doing the same with my model and it proved to be impossible and far beyond obtaining the steering controls. You basically need the spiral cable assembly, the wiring harnesses and finally the factory head unit (like in Europe) to make it work. in summary, a VERY expensive exercise indeed.

As for diesel model, we have discussed that in length in the Series III forum section which you can refer to for more information. The diesel is not yet on the cards for Australia.
There is lots of information around the various threads and I am sure you will be quite busy reading it all.

Please use the search feature of the forum first and post any questions you may have into existing threads where possible. Try to avoid creating a new thread if the topic is already covered, thanks.

Let us know if you need any help with any aspect of the forum and we will be more than happy to assist.

We have set-up quite an extensive forum guide section which you may like to refer to for help and it can be found HERE

As a new member you are encouraged you to familiarize yourself with the following section of the forum: Site Navigation & Forum Guides

If you could update your location and add your name and Exy model into your signature of the Miscellaneous section of the Control Panel it would help us all to answer any future questions you might have.

Now that you are a member of our forum, I am sure you would like to purchase a Member's Pack and gain access to the many purchasing and selling benefits of the forum while at the same time help promote our forum to others ? emoticon
See what is on offer here.

Enjoy your stay with us and let us know if you need any help.

Hi Doug,

In the Ti model of the T30 the spiral cable is already in the steering wheel for the cruise control but it is the head unit which lacks the connections for the steering wheel controls.

If your T31 also has cruise controls on the steering wheel then you may also have the spiral cable and only need to check or change the head unit and then get the control switches from overseas.

Sorry Kev, it is a different spiral cable assembly for the steering mounted controls and the one currently in the Ti is not suitable for this.

I'm well behind the times when it comes to car audio, but it wouldn't surprise me if at least one of the major aftermarket head unit manufacturers might have a bluetooth steering wheel control?
