Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
I've decided to get my exxy's butterfly screws looked at soon and have been wondering whether it's best to get the local dealer to do it, or a reputable independent mechanical workshop.
A local mechanic, recommended by a friend with a Saab, gave me an estimate of around $400.
I checked with Ultratune if they could do it and they quoted similar pricing - then backed out and suggested I get the dealer to do it!
Today I went to the only NT Nissan dealer here in Darwin (Kerry's Automotive Group) and was quoted 8 hours labour at $121 per hour, after a mechanic had looked at the pics/instructions I'd downloaded via the Forum. I had to really push them to get a price - everyone was out to lunch, so the service attendant had to go ask a mechanic, which took a further 15minutes out of my lunch break.
I am ringing other dealers interstate for pricing comparisons. Having reread much of this thread tonight, it seems like quite a simple procedure, and I've noted John/Dunoons cost of $300 for two and a half hours work in May 2007. I would expect that costs have risen by now but I can't quite reconcile $900 and 8 hours of work.
I'm not sure whether to talk to someone else at the dealership re their price, or get the local mechanic to do it. Nobody here in Darwin appears to have done the job before, and no-one has inspired my confidence in them.
Any advice or suggestions to help me decide would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
Julie,
Any independent mechanic should be able to do it. It's quite a simple procedure really.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
Thanks guys
Jalal thats what I thought esp since a few members had done it themselves, but then the Ultratune guy didn't want to do it.
Hi Dave, the Nissan dealer has tied up about half the available brands including Holden, Mercedes, Jeep, Mazda and others. Nearest other Nissan dealer is 800km away in Kununurra. Not the type of place you can go to for friendly advice, unfortunately.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
Maybe the Ultratune guy didn't want to touch it fearing it would still be covered by the Nissan warranty and should something happen he doesn't want to get involved in the process, so if you tell him that he's doing this job for you independently and away from Nissan, am sure he'll do it.
Having said that, if he does find one of these screws missing your case with Nissan will almost be impossible to win. Just thought I'd warn you.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
I did read that letter, today. Does it actually mean that if I take it to the dealer here and they do find a screw missing Nissan would fix the problem? Warranty expired October last year (2008) but I only clicked over 100,000 a few weeks back and think I'm around 100,400km now.
I reckon the exxy feels quite sluggish these days, but put it down to having the cat converter fixed (dealers explanation), or my imagination.....
I might phone the service manager direct and see if he can give me an accurate pricing that sounds more reasonable - just in case.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
I suggest getting a mechanic just to visually check if they are all there first.
If they are it shouldn't br a problem for him to remove them and re fix using locktite.
If there is one missing, then ask him not too touch them and re install as he found it.
I would then immediately take it to Nissan and ask them to do the job which should be fixed under the recall issue.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
Hi Julie,
If a Nissan dealer finds a missing screw it would mean you have a much bigger problem on your hands and the dealer would have to approach Nissan Australia for approval to do the tests and determine the extent of the damage to the engine. They will not touch it if they can detect that someone has already played around with these screws, so Tony's suggestion is correct in getting the independent mechanic to first visually inspect these screws and if he finds them all in place, they can proceed to loctite them, if not or if one (or more) are missing, they need to put everything back the way it was for the dealer to inspect.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
Checked with UltraTune and they said it would cost just as much to look at it as to do it, which means I'd end up paying double if I had to take it back to the dealer. UltraTune quoted $300ish for 3 hours at $95 per hour.
The service manager at my always helpful original dealer on the Sunshine Coast, Garry Crick Auto, said they would charge approximately $340 for 3hours at $113.30 per hour, plus parts, which is about what I would have expected.
Will have to approach the dealer again, just to be on the safe side, in case any work does need to be done.
I am a bit concerned as my exxy has already had the muffler replaced, the front wheel bearings replaced with the front right one twice, plus the cat converter. Now my aircon fan has packed it in, just out of warranty. What more could I ask for??? If none of that had happened I probably wouldn't bother checking the screws.
