Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

There was no official Nissan recall for the xtrail regarding this defect, so it is advisable that all T30 Nissan X-Trails do the preventative fix by applying loctite to these screws.

Check the previous pages for the description of the preventative fix.

Jalal
It seems to me that the T31 has a diferent intake ram to the T30 as it is made from plastic.
Where the T30 is alloy.
The T31 looks like its 'non servicable' to access the butterfly screws.
Mind you I only say this on a quick visual inspection.

Hi Tony,

I know that the upper intake section of the T31 is plastic and I believe it is much easier to dismantle than the T30 as it seems to clip together in 2 halves. It has to be serviceable.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

I can't remember where I read this but I seem to recall that the T31 has a mesh of some sort below the butterflies to catch anything eg wayward screws.

Checking the manual doesn't help as I can't see anywhere that deals with dismantling the intake manifold - it just details removing it as a unit - maybe it is just a hollow moulding with nothing inside it. If that were the case the only butterfly valve is in the electronic throttle unit.

Glenn, it will be great if such a mesh has been fitted by Nissan, but I guess we can't be sure until we actually see it ourselves emoticon

OK Guy, I think I know how to get to the screws of the T31. that plastic intake manifold is one piece set-up with the pipe that are bolted down to the lower part of the engine from the back.

Here is an illustration of it:

Image

It seems to be held by 2 bolts going into the engine block at the back of it.

I have no idea how easy it is to access these bolts from the back.

Jalal,

That pic only shows a single runner for each cylinder.
Maybe the T31 does not have the butterflies.
Could you do a search of the Electronic Service Manual for VIAS to see if the same intake system is used ?

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

Wouldn't the butterflies be in the intake adapter? #11 in the pic.

EDIT: Found something interesting which indeed may suggest that the T31 doesn't have butterfly screws which is a major design change in the QR25DE engine:

No, as it is still a single tube for each cylinder at this point also.

Now this is interesting.
It seems like the T31 has variable cam timing INSTEAD of the variable intake of the T30.
I think we should do more research on this and especially on the probability of fitting mesh to the runners to catch the screws before they enter the cylinders.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

The T30 QR25DE also has the same inlet cam variable timing, many Nissan engines do. There is no change there.
But it definitely looks like there is no inlet butterflies for variable intake length!! Maybe too much hassle for small gain?

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

Thank you so much for pointing out the butterfly screws problem.
We picked up our 2004 Exy a few months ago and have been going to have a look at them each weekend since.
My partner Ryan got on to it this arvo.
Thanks to the pictures posted it was a reasonably easy job.
He found one of the screws was definitely loose, I think he said it was in number 4. Gord knows what sort of mischief it would've done if it'd let go!
We both really appropriate all the effort that goes into this site, keep up the wonderful work. emoticon
