Hmm, so now John all you have to worry about is whether they did the work properly and the screws are not going to fall out sooner than the factory "tight" ones would have!! emoticon

Adam,

The factory ones wouldn't have had any loctite on them, so John wouldn't need to worry for a VERY long time.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

If I had mine locktited, I'd only be worried about the temperature rating of the locktite, and whether it's going to be dissolved by the fuel...

(And if you don't think fuel would get onto them, you just need to look inside the air intake (when installing the TBS for example) to see how dirty it gets in there!)

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

That won't happen any time soon Rich, otherwise they wouldn't have used this type of loctite as part of the official recall service in the US.

The heat rating and other data about the type of loctite to use has been discussed in the previous pages of this thread.

I just hope the dealer that done the service for John used the right type.

You would think that nissan coulds come up with some thing like a inspection using a endiscope, small tv camera inserted into the inlet manafold and see if the screws are loose.thinking outside the square.Used them at work all the time.cheers

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

Yes Ray, you're absolutely correct in thinking that and in fact this was the exact procedure recommended by Nissan Australia to Brett's dealer to identify the problem OR so the dealer claims!

The camera will probably be successful in identifying a fallen-off screw, but I don't think it will be accurate to identify a loose screw.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

I think if you moved the butterfly shaft up and down and observed it with the camera you would work out if it was loose or not,or the screws were sticking out a little. The very large majority of x-trails have no trouble at all so nissan should do this as a stich in time recall.Just my two bobs worth.cheers

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

Ray,

The butterfly shaft is an internal part, to move it you would have had to open the lower section of the intake and this procedure requires no cameras, as you will be looking at the screws live.

I think the butterfly shaft operates off a vacuum unit that is external. So can be operated from the outside.I believe it can be done.cheers

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

Hi Ray,

My apologies. You're 100% correct!

The power valve shaft can indeed be moved externally by turning the VIAS Control Solenoid Valve on and off.

This procedure has been described in detail in the ESM as well.

Image

Am not sure what Nissan are waiting for, if this procedure can be done in a matter of minutes without dismantling anything????
