Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
Brett, hang out for a new piston to be fitted,i feel if the bore is ok this would make your engine good again.I also think this butterfly valve system does open when towing heavy loads.
This is a very unhappy and sorry saga and does very little credit to the players.Does nissan take in to consideration how many kilo/s your vechicle has done, when they do a repair job.Are all these vechicles fitted with manual gearboxes? The vechicle i know from traralgon was a manual, and i wonder do people with manual gearboxes perhaps rev them harder thus operating the butterfly valves more. The simple fact is poor design and limp wristed people in japan, who for some reason or another can not tighten up screws. The only good thing that i have learned is that a fix has been done in 2006,so any new ones are ok.cheers

Finally got the exy back today. It will be appearing in the 'For Sale' thread soon. It drives ****, has a bad resonance in the engine and stalled on me a few times. To make matters worse, they replaced the ruined Iridium plug with a standard NGK and emptied my fuel tank for no reason. I will continue this aspect in the 'dealer thread'.
That is terrible Brett.
I was intending to keep my X-Trail for some time given it has such low kms but now I am considering my options.
Also, probably not much point listing your car in the For Sale part of this forum given the comment above and all the history of the problem that is listed on this site. The first thing I would do if I saw a car for sale on an owners forum is search for all posts by the seller to see what issues there have been with the car!

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
Ray,
BOTH Auto and Manual xtrails are affected by this.
It is not a problem associated with loose screws from the factory which haven't been tightened correctly, rather these screws not having any loctite and which get loose when you rev your engine above 5000RPM
This is when these 4 butterflies operate to let more air into the engine.
The problems seems to happen after 50-60K on the clock, which is enough time for these screws to get loose.
In regards to Brett's car sale, I would have waited until this problem is fixed and the car is running fine before advertising it, but Brett may have different circumstances forcing him to do so now.
With this whole saga, I just find it amazing that such little parts which aren’t even electronic or electrical can cause the clean reputation of a marvellous car to be affected that much and even more so, with no immediate action and attention from the manufacturer to rectify this simple defect.
As I already said to Nissan, our confidence in this car has been GREATLY shaken and this will have a follow-on effect on the coming new xtrail model using the same engine.

But the new engines will have the modified parts right? Didn't you (or someone) even mentioned something about a mesh between the butterfly and the cylinder?

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
The screws have been modified in 2006 to include washers and there was a screen put in the lower portion of the intake. That is the information I have in regards to the 2006 (onwards) Sentra Spec-V QR25DE engines, but there is NOTHING solid to confirm that this has been done in the newer xtrails, apart from the recent photo posted by Brett which shows one of these newer screws attached to one of the butterfly plates in his engine while being repaired.
The other confirmation which we have and which may prove that a new design screws and plates exist for the exy, is the fact that some dealers are now taking appointments to change them at owners expense and we will soon hear from a member who has his exy booked-in for May to do just that.
I have also come across a photo of the new QR25DE engine which will be included in 2007/2008 Sentra Spec-V that has been released recently in the US and the intake manifold has also been changed to plastic (no longer alloy), however no mention of these screws and/or butterflies or if the design change included them too.
We can discuss the new QR25DE engine in a separate thread and I'll post a photo of it for you guys to see. I don't know however if the new model xtrail will have this new QR25DE engine or not.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
I was contacted by the spare parts section of my local Nissan dealer this morning he has been trying to get me the new screws and plates for my EXY, He tells me he cant supply them as he cant get them from Nissans. So im wondering what they are using to replace the damaged ones. Also as I asked before can someone tell me what the butterfly shaft and scews are made from as I nolonger trust Nissan I will approach the Loctite Co. myself to find the right product to use to lock these screws.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
Al,
You need to use Loctite Red Hi-Temp #272 with the existing or new screws.
I don't know what they're made of, but this is the type of loctite used with the Sentra Spec-V screws and plates.
I'm waiting to hear about the part numbers for the new screws and plates.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
That's good news Brett and no, you're not being ignored by Nissan Australia for sure (as I stated to you yesterday).
We're trying to get the same level of attention (and more) from Nissan for the rest of the xtrailers who have not yet experienced this defect and hopefully never have to experience it.
Going on a round trip in your exy in its current state of repair is a HUGE gamble however and I am not sure if I would have risked getting stuck somewhere with a blown engine.
