12V Outlet

Hi All,
Does anyone know if the rear 12V power outlet is suitable for running a 39ltr 3 way fridge?

thanks
Darryl

Re: 12V Outlet

Check the fuse rating for the 12V outlet, so long as the fridge draws less current than that then you will be fine.

Re: 12V Outlet

I am currently working on a better circuit for my Engel fridge due to advice I received from my auto electrican mate regarding the factory rear 12v output. Apparently, the outlet is rated at 10Amp, but the connections and cable are of a poor quality.

As a result, I have hard wired an Engel heavy duty cable directly from the battery to the rear passenger side for my fridge. It also has an inline fuse for safety reasons. The good thing about the Engel cable is the connection is a posi-fit, meaning that it screws in, and not simply slots in like the factory outlet. This stops the cable falling out and all the beer going cold.

I also run some heavy duty 20Amp cable from my auxillary fuse box to the rear also for running fluro's and whatever else I need. I just need to find some good quality marine type 12v outlets.

The posi-fit connection sits directly behind the fridge slide, so the constant moving wont put stress on the cable.

As seen in the third pic, all my accesories run via this fuse box, making tracing a problem a lot easier. It is also a lot neater too. The Engel power lead is grey in colour, with a white in-line fuse (bottom right corner of pic), for easy identification.

Brett in his last post said (quote) "I have hard wired an Engel heavy duty cable directly from the battery to the rear passenger side for my fridge. It also has an inline fuse for safety reasons." (end quote)

When first taking deliver, I also fitted a similar set-up for my Engel fridge as Brett.

An added advantage of this is that the power is there all the time, not just when the ignition is turned on. This is especially useful when shopping in the hot weather. The battery will power my fridge for a few hours with safety, BUT NOT overnight.

Just be careful not to forget to turn the fridge off before you flatten the battery

Re: 12V Outlet

Thanks John, but I am forever aware of leaving the fridge turned on. I am in the process of wiring up a Piranha battery monitor which has a 11.2v cut-out. By placing this between my battery and then fridge, whenever it detects less then 11.2v, it will cut power, enabling me to start. I also have the extra insurance of keeping a 900A 17Ah battery pack in my tyre well at all times. Just in case. emoticon

Re: 12V Outlet

Regarding these outlets, drivers box and rear area, do they use the same plug as the cig lighter ?
My compressor works OK from the cig lighter but not from either of the other 2 points.
Fuse is fine.
Tried in IGN,ACC and with engine running.

Any clues chaps ?

Re: 12V Outlet

With my phone charger I've noticed that the power outlet in the driver's pocket seems to be tighter than the cig lighter socket.

Maybe you need to push the compressor plug in more so that the middle pin makes contact ?

Re: 12V Outlet

I tried my compressor and it is working fine from all 3 sockets.

Try pushing it a bit harder maybe it's not contacting properly.

Just tried the actual cig lighter, works fine from the console but not in the other 2 sockets.

Re: 12V Outlet

The cig lighter will not work on the other two outlets, only the centre one.

Do you have any other 12 volts accessory (a light or something) you can test with?
