Re: Grinding/ Rubbing noise

Hi Guys,

An old thread I know, but it is now related to a problem that started today on my drive to work.

It is raining in Sydney this morning, so as usual I engage AUTO mode but this time I started to hear a grinding/growling type of noise from the rear every time I take a turn. This noise was even more audible when I entered the building car park at work.

I kept driving around the car and making turns and this grinding noise was very much there. I decided to turn the AUTO mode off and revert back to 2WD and this noise was gone straight away.

I am concerned that this noise is coming from the rear diff, but puzzled as to why it will only produce that noise while turning and not going in a straight line emoticon

My 90K service is coming-up in a week or two, so am gonna mention this problem to the dealer and see what they can find.

Re: Grinding/ Rubbing noise

OK Guys,

I have sad news to report emoticon

While on my way to the stickers printing place this morning and after engaging the AUTO as I usually do when it rains, all hell broke loose and I started hearing grinding noises and clunking as if the whole shaft was going to fall apart emoticon

Switched on the hazards and crawled to the dealership.

They test drove it and confirmed that is a problem with the rear diff and it is indeed sounding like broken gears inside the diff itself.

They said they have NEVER had this type of problem on any xtrail before and I also confirmed to them that fact, that I never came across broken gears in the rear diff on an exy before.

We have decided to keep the exy at the dealership so they can dismantle the rear diff and see what is wrong emoticon

I bet this is gonna cost me mega bucks emoticon emoticon

Sorry I didn't read this sooner, but an earlier repsonse wouldn't have made any difference...

The reason it only happened on turning is because there is slightly different rotation speed/distance of wheels when you are turning - moreso at lower speeds and tighter turning circles. The fact you heard the noise just proves this by the system engaging the drive to the rear wheels.

I wonder if all that extra power has found a weakness in the Xtrail rear diff ? emoticon

Re: Grinding/ Rubbing noise

Really Jalal, there are MANY factors which can contribute to a failed diff.

Manufacturers do not automatically put in a diff which can handle the torque of a drag car because it would be too heavy, too big and cost too much. There has to be limits and usually it is the normal operational torque of the expected engine output plus a safety factor of some degree.

The higher initia of larger rims might also contribute but this would be to a lesser extent as towing or a heavily loaded Xtrail which puts greater forces on a diff.

But keep in mind there are overseas members we know in the other Nissan forum who have done more power mods to their Xtrails than you and they have not reported any mechanical problems with any drive train components emoticon

Kev,

You're forgetting that we're talking about a diff that only works part-time and on demand and most of my driving is in 2WD mode where this diff takes no load whatsoever apart from spinning the rear wheels to follow the front ones.

It will be interesting to see what Nissan try to charge, but you should be able to pick up a diff from a wrecker shouldnt you?

Re: Grinding/ Rubbing noise

Yes Matt, I have posted the wreckers price for a diff in good condition in the other thread (the diff thread) $350.00 only

Another wrecker told me they usually throw away these diffs with the car when dismantled cause nobody buys them OR they sell thm in bulk to overseas markets.

Not forgetting that at all Jalal.
I also use Auto in wet weather and I am sure the same goes for our overseas members.

Now are you forgetting that our 4wd system engages the rear wheels for WOT even when in 2wd mode ?
