Kanangra Boyd National Park

I really wanted to get these photos online so everyone can see what it's like there. I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting to give their X-Trail abit of a workout, and see what their abilities are emoticon We went it alone (Clare and I in our X-Trail, with no assistance vehicles like we usually have emoticon ) so we were more cautious than we would've been if we did actually have another vehicle...

We're half-way through packing to move house so that's why I haven't had time to make up a webpage code with thumbnails for so long...

I managed to get the coding done for the thumbnails later tonight, so sorry to those that had to painfully click on undescriptive file names to view them before I had the chance to code it!

http://ww2.datazap.net/ftp/basshead/kanangra_index.html

(I hope all the full size photos have been rotated correctly).

Now for a brief description of the photos (too fiddly to include it under each photo, but now also copied to webpage).

The first three photos are of the frozen dew after the first night we stayed...

DSC00009 is Clare picking up sections of the surface of a frozen puddle by the side of the road on the way to KBNP...

I must say that the creek crossing in photos DSC00062-67 was not attempted due to the angles and deep ruts of the road on the opposite side of the crossing... I took several photos to try and give an idea of how treacherous it was on the other side. The bush on the left hand side mostly obscures the very large rock you can see behind (and to the top of) it. It was an absolutely painful walk across knee-deep high freezing water (after just two steps in, I turned back to Clare with the expression of "I so do not want to have to walk all the way across this, then all the way back, and not be able to attempt driving across it"). I think the maximum temperature that day reached 6 degrees on the in-dash thermometer! Unfortunately Clare didn't video me walking across as it would've been great footage to watch (and laugh at!).

The files DSC00068-80 we did cross over - it was two separate crossings (which would become one massively wide and deeper crossing if there had been more rain) and it was approx 40cm deep at the deepest section when we got there (of course I used a stick to try and guesstimate it's depth). DSC00078&79 I took to try and give an idea of how deep it was by the water mark on the sides of the car. The files from DSC00074 onwards were taken after we'd crossed that section. If I had the map in front of me I'd be able to remember what creek it was we crossed over...

Also DSC00081 is alot steeper than it looks (actually I am surprised at how well it turned out). YOu will notice you can't even see the front of the bonnet in the photo (but you can see the CB antenna sticking up) and it was taken from the driver's seat - so that alone should give you an indication of how steep it actually was. We did it in LOCK (as with several other sections of the track).

There was also a section of track that I really wanted to get footage of (about as steep as the previously-mentioned photo, only more slippery and uneven), however Clare was too busy being scared to want to video it for me. It took at least 5 attempts in one particular section that was very difficult to get past - I was having trouble finding the correct line to take without a) damaging the underbody and b) without sliding backwards down the hill in an uncontrolled slide! I so wish I had that on video, but like I always say - there's always another time (which keeps turning out to be another lost opportunity to get some gold footage!)

DSC00083-91 are of the frost back at Oberon the following morning.

The last three photos are of the very very low Oberon Dam... Lowest I've ever seen it in the last few years I've been there.

R&C,
I am planning a trip to the Kanangra NP area and saw your trip report. One problem though, I don't seem to be able to access your linked photo path. It tells me that the site is out of date. Any ideas why.
