posticon trail baggers!

No, not some oaf verbally disrespecting the Xtrail, but an official register of off road trails that an Xtrail has completed, or 'bagged'.

Starting off here in the forum, and moving to the web pages when I get a moment, will be a honour board for the first to claim they have taken their xtrail on a published 4wd trek.

The basics are this. Find a reputable text, or site with 4x4 trails, take the xtrail on one, claim the bagging on here, and get your name in lights immortalised on the xtrail site.

To start off, based on the books "4wd treks close to Sydney", and "4wds treks around Melboure", here are a list of treks to be bagged:

http://shop.boilingbilly.com.au/cache/item-13public.html?cache=no
TRAIL, BAGGER
Yengo National Park,
Abercrombie Trek, -Peter
Yarramunmun Trail, - Peter
The Bridle Track, - Peter
Dixons Long Point,
The Blue Mountains, -Peter
Watagan Mountains, -Peter
Sunny Corner Trek,
Touring the Turon,
Trek to Newnes, - Grayham
Baal Bone Gap,
Stockton Beach, - Heather12
Terrible Billy Trek, -Peter
Barrington Tops,
Old Settlers Road
The Hunter Range.

Melbourne:
http://shop.boilingbilly.com.au/cache/item-39public.html?cache=no
Lerderderg State Park,
AngaHooke-Lorne State Park,
Otway Forests,
Mt Cole Meander,
Pyrenees Range Trek,
The Grampians Tour,
Mt Disappointment,
Tallarook State Forest,
Murrindindi Trek,
Bunyip State Park,
Yarra State Forest,
Rubicon Adventure,
Big River Country,
Brooklyn Town Trek,
Donnelly's Creek,
Brunton's Bridge
Avon River Trek.

Any other areas, post your reference, and bagging rights!

NOTE: Not all of these treks are even doable in an xtrail, so only attempt them if they are within your capability. In general Xtrails can handle anything rated "easy", and should be able to do most "medium" but some "medium", and almost all "hard" are only asking for trouble. Do so at your own risk.

How about having to upload a photo of the "bagged" by the baggee or passengers !!

Does Fraser Island QLD count? Spent 3 days there over Christmas last year, the X-Trail handled itself well. Here are a few pics ...

Pic One

Pic Two

Pic Three

An attempt at being artistic! ....

Pic Four

And finally, these guys (yes that is a Patrol and a Land Cruiser!) got bogged down in the soft stuff at Indian Head, entertainment for the locals who stood on the bank jeering! Needless to say we didn't venture that way although apparently a Subaru Liberty went through without a problem ....

Pic Five

Yep, they both got a snatch out by a little old (very old) land cruiser, the one that looks like a Wrangler. Perfect vehicle for those conditions, had BIG tyres and a lovely sounding V8 - unstoppable!

There was nearly a fight between the Patrol driver and one of the jeering locals, for some reason the Patrol did not have it's front hubs engaged, that is why it bogged down at the back - unfortunately he did not like being told!!

Re: trail baggers!

So how did the x-trail handle soft sand? I'm interested to see if lowering tyre pressures is necessary. My concern is the reduction in clearance this would result in.

I've owned an outback before and I found that the extra mm in clearance outweighed the benefits of lowering tyre pressure.

Re: trail baggers!

Hi Evilroy

I have never needed to let my tyres down below 25psi and have never had any trouble. I did a track recently that was very soft sand with a high "hump" in the middle without any air out (so around 34 psi) and I got through no problems. Most of the beach driving north of Brisbane is on fairly compacted sand anyway, it's usually just the entry / exit points that are soft.

Regards

Re: trail baggers!

I did have to lower the pressure, started the first drive at normal pressures and found it was bouncing all over the place and getting bogged down easily. Dropped the pressures to the recommended 18psi for sand driving and the improvement was significant. I never found reduced ground clearance to be an issue, the only times I nearly got stuck were when I lost momentum up hill, then trying to get going again was a nightmare! I guess an auto would have helped in that situation.

Hi Adam,

I'd like to add fraser island to the treks on the site. I emailed you but it may not have got through.,
Could you send in a couple of paragraphs on where you went in Fraser?

Re: trail baggers!

I was out at bribe island a year back in our Ti and managed to get stuck in the surf wash out (the ledge left by the tide. Turned right to do a U turn on the beach and just caught myself on a difficult angle with not enough momentum. Unfortunately, the front wheels and back right wheels didn't have enough weight on the ground and dug themselves a nice little hole.

We'd only gone day tripping and didn't have recovery gear, so I was in the middle of a digout when the world's most sun battered bloke in a landcruiser drove past and offered a hand. And I was so close to having dug it out too! emoticon

That's the only problem I've ever had and it was a combination of driver inexperience and low clearance. Of all the beach driving I've done, its the only issue I've had. I'd consider a lift kit if you want to do more serious 4WDing, but then you have to put up with the more soggy handling that comes with that sort of thing.
